Muffler advice please

I really want my Runner to have more growl to it. I had a Honda Accord that my parents got me for my first car, and I put a delta 40 series flowmaster on it, and I loved the sound it had. Now for my 4runner, I don't want that whiny rice rocket sound, I just want a low growl thats not too loud. Like the TRD catback system, except not, cause I don't want to spend $600.
I know most 4runner owners buy magnaflow, so I looked into that and the local muffle shop guy said they're way over priced and I should look into "Xlerator" mufflers. He said they are the same exact thing as magnaflow, just cheaper.
What I'm asking is-
-Does anyone know anything about an Xlerator mufflers?
-Does anyone have videos or soundclips of their mufflers/exhaust systems?
-What do you recommend I do to just get a low growl thats not too loud?

Never heard of X. I run a Flowmaster 40 taken off an 08 mustang gt, and low and behold, it sounds like one. It has a nice low growl and makes a mean little undertone. I have another buddy though who works for Firestone and has an 8" on a 92 4runner he did himself, telling me to get a Borla system, saying it works best. Just two suggestions :):cheers:
 
i wouldnt run any turbo/bullet/glass pack style mufflers on a v6 if you dont want a ricey sound to it. chambered mufflers like Flowmaster as much as i hate them is prob your best bet.
 
Thanks guys. Anyone else know anything about Xlerator? I may just have to buy it cause the muffler shop guy is 100% convinced that its the same as a Mangnaflow...
 
Also, I know that most people on here suggest 18' magnaflows...that means the body is 18' right? not from tip to tip, cause tip to tip is 24'...

That is correct. I have the 18 inch magnaflow and love it, great sound and not totally overbearing noise.
 
For my 5th Gen, I got a 24 inch Magnaflow Part Number: 12586, it was only about 40.00 dollars, with an additional 35.00 for install. Can't really think THAT was too expensive! Sounds great. .....be safe.

I have a magnaflow 14 myself. #11215 I took a leap and tried it without knowing the sound and i couldn't be happier with my choice. Nice low growl in low rpms and still deep in the high rpms. I turn heads even when simply cruising. although i cant hear the exhaust at times due to my cai. But i have heard it drive by (gf driving it) and it sounds great. I paid 70 for the muffler 30 for the install. Best of luck!

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. Does anyone recommend exhaust tips? I was thinking of sticking with the stock pipes but what does aftermarket tips do? Is it the larger the tip the deeper the sound?
 
Also, I went over to my friends house today to check out his exhaust. He has a lifted, completely tricked out '03 Tacoma with a 14in magnaflow. I really liked how his sounded. It would be the same right? I'm so completely torn between the 14/18in.... I've read almost every thread on this site that had to do with 14/18in magnaflows. It seems like everyone that goes with a 14 loves it, and whoever goes with an 18 either really loves it or hates it and wishes it was louder.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I would like to enjoy the exhaust. I know you can't really hear the 18in unless you mash on the pedal, but I want to be able to enjoy a little rumble at the normal daily driving speed, and when I do mash, I don't want it to be overbearingly loud... I know all of you wanna slap me for sounding so whiny and bit**y but these are my preferences...and I think it sounds like a 14in, but I'm afraid the 14in will be too loud.
