Muffler Options

I want to change my sound. I dont want an unbelievably loud exhaust. something that has nice deep tone and sounds loud only at WOT. ANyone?

WHen I had mine done i had the pipe run straight out the back by the tow hitch and i like the looks of it much better...

but since you dont want as loud and deeper i'd say you'd want a 50 series

There are two recent posts that are very similar. I'm sure this question comes up often and I figured I'd respond to both for archive/search purposes. The following is a comparison based on the manufacturer's stats/websites, as well as a synopsis on my exhaust setup.

Gotta love Magnaflow's straight through design, materials, and low cost. Full stainless housing, core, deadening mesh, AND welds all for a whopping hundred bucks...

Dynomax is not bad. BUT... they don't have as much packing material - no stainless mesh. It is unclear whether their perforated core is stainless.

No offense to anyone with Flowmasters but baffled/chambered mufflers are a complete waste of time. The design is strictly for sound, (click above dynomax link - shows exhaust flow comparisons ). If anything, the design increases turbulence and backpressure. Anyone with a science background will laugh his/her a$$ off at the following BS:

Cherry Bomb's Vortex is also a chambered exhaust, but has a better design than Flowmaster. It comes with aluminized mild steel... which in terms of longevity, is a waste of time.

I have the 5x11x28" Magnaflow in polished stainless steel with mandrel bent 2.5" stainless pipes. If I'm not mistaken, the polished version comes in 304 stainless unlike the 409 stainless on the satin.

It is just a little louder than stock. Slight rumble at idle. No annoying drone at 2000 rpm cruising. Roars at WOT.

I HIGHLY recommend you go with Magnaflow from a materials/cost/performance standpoint.

Once again, no offense intended Sloan. Just trying to educate folks. I once went with a flowmaster 40 on my prior 99 just based on sound clips that I heard. I did not know the internal design, nor did I care. I'm getting too old for that, (got tired of the 2000 rpm drone), and my goal for my current truck is to increase its performance.

i see what your saying, but in all honesty flowmaster is the only muffler option besides getting glasspacks around here so i really had no choice lol

i will probably get something quieter in a few years anyway.

man I dont know how anybody can stand a 40 series flomaster I had a 50 suv series for two days and I thought the sound was going to rattle my teeth out so a 70 series went in it's place and yes it has the drone but I paid $45.00 dollars and a case of coors to have installed you gotta love the hook up. thanks for info on the other products

I know this is a really stupid and newbie question, but do 3rd gen 4runner already have mufflers installed? I looked under the car, and i couldn't tell whether or not I was looking at the muffler or gas tank. If the thing i was looking at was a muffler, it was friggin' huge.

If you are under your car with your feet towards the engine the gas tank is a flatter piece on the left side. It's about three feet long and one and a half wide.

The muffler is on the right side of course. It's oval and is about twice as big as the Cherrybomb Vortex.

You are correct. It does have a skid plate.

Flowmaster .02

i just put on a 40 series, it does have the 2000 rpm roar, but i dont mind, and the muffler guy who i go to told me that the flowmaster is made of a thicker material than the magnaflow and it would last longer. maybe something to do with utahs winters not sure. ive had the 40 series on the 2.7 and now put one on my 3.4, and theres a big difference.
