I need a muffler and have done some searching, but every thread I have found (maybe there are some I did not find) seems to be very old, like 15 years or more. What is everyone using for a replacement muffler these days? Maybe the standard muffler shop one is fine, IDK. I'm not looking for a cat back- don't want to spend that much and I feel like there is not much performance to gain so why bother? BUT on the other hand, if I have to replace my current muffler (it rattles), I may as well get a decent one that sounds good and possibly is slightly high flow too so looking for suggestions. What's every one using these days?

JBA, Borla and Magnaflow are the best performance exhausts, not in any particular order. They will all give a throatier sound as well. I have a Magnaflow. Had a Jardine before that, but they are out of the 4Runner business now. I am planning on replacing the Magnaflow with the JBA cat-back next year. A free-er flowing exhaust combined with the Deckplate mod + the Airraid MIT do make a noticeable difference in power. The stock intake and exhaust are tuned for low noise at the expense of robbing the engine of some useful power. If you can deal with a "noisier" vehicle, it's worth it, IMHO.

I did the borla muffler, Removed the resanator ( intake) and I liked the sound, did not notice a performance difference. But what is said is true, the engines were detuned for the 4 runner with a slightly more restrictive exhaust and the big resanator. Compare to same year tacoma with same engine....more free flow exhaust and smaller resanotor...and has 10 more hp ( from a brochure a few years back)

I appreciate the fact that it tucks up in, closer to the bottom of the truck, more than stock, it does add a bit more growl, but also comes with a 3 stage sound tuning system so you can choose your level.
I am not a technically minded mechanical dude, just a guy with a 4Runner, but if stock isn't quite enough for you, I'd say it's a nice option.

I have been quite pleased with the northern stainless cat back system. I actually have 2 on 2 different 3rd gens 4runner and 1 on a 2010 Toyota Sienna Van.. Are they are good as OEM no... They are just affordable and will last just as long or longer then the walker replacements. This is my goto muffler system when i need a replacement.
You have to make sure you get the correct one due to federal and California emissions being slightly different exhaust.

My less than 2 year old Northeastern Exhaust. Replaced it with a Magnaflow catback this week.
I checked the ebay link and that thing actually looks easy to install. For some reason I was thinking it would be a PITA that I don't want to deal with now that it's winter (kind of) in NoDak. More to think about now but still leaning toward the local guy and just having it done Tues.
So i went to the local guy today and ended up going with him. I was there and I just have way too may things to do so I got it done since I was there. I'm satisfied with the product but feel like I got screwed on the price. Paid $354 (that's after a 10% military discount) for a "Magnaflow replica" "performance" muffler. The brand is a Street Max (5 x 11) and it's stainless. Seems fine, just a little bit louder than stock I think, and no drone on the highway, which is what I wanted. So, assuming it lasts decently, it's fine, just feel like I got bent over and will not be going back there for anything.

It’s just 4 flange bolts and two gaskets. This is the easiest exhaust I’ve ever worked on.

And the beauty of that is, you know exactly where to go if it does start a-rattlin'! Especially when its -10!
But for these engines, at 200 ponies, you don't need a straight thru for performance, only for a deeper tone. Hope it sounds good SOULMAN!

The only thing rattling right now is my empty wallet- but I do like the sound better. It's probably only noticeable by me but then again I'm the only one who counts! :jump:

I took mine to an exhaust pro in Lexington KY.
It was $260 with tax for a cheap ass muffler (I bought it without one) I'm sure it's not the best but with the rust on the rest of the vehicle frame I'm sure it'll be close to Outlasting the truck
