Looking to replace my original muffler on my 2001. I would like to keep the car quiet like the oem muffler. Any recommendations? Prices?

Order a walker muffler part number 54681 direct bolt in and sounds the same and it is stainless steel. I think summit racing has the best prices if I remember right.

+1 on the Walker. I just ordered the Quite Flow SS for mine -- I went with the muffler and tail pipe, so it's fresh from the cat back.
Don't forget the two gaskets that go between the flanges. I also recommend a tube of exhaust assembly sealant/paste available at any auto parts store.

I also bought the muffler and the tailpipe w/gaskets. I bought mine from Rockauto.com.Pretty good price.

I got mine from Rock Auto. Here's my order: Note that it's TWO gaskets. (You'll also need 4 bolts/nuts from the hardware store. I think 5/16" x 2". Take the parts with you if you're unsure.

Walker #54681 is for Cali Emissions, #55054 is Federal Emissions.

I installed the #55054 about 4 years ago and the rear pipe recently rusted through and separated from the flange. It has a "lifetime" warranty so I called Walker and their message said to contact the retailer so I called Amazon. Amazon then told me I had to talk to Walker. Walker definitely was not going to do anything so I spent about 2 hours on the phone with Amazon on three different calls - finally got them to send me a new one for free although they made it sound like it was not their normal policy.

The original Toyota muffler lasted 13 years and this Walker "lifetime" SS muffler lasted less than 4. Not sure how Walker makes money but I guess it has to do with how few replacement mufflers they have to buy given that labor is not covered, the warranty only applies to the original purchaser, needing to send back the old one and the fact that they won't deal with retail customers.... bottom line - the muffler is ok but not designed to last.

Proven fact...99% of people never hold long term warranty to task or even try to use it. Just like gift cadrs...it's something like 30-40% never ever even use them. Just look at the overall results of Bilstein's customer service and excuses not to honor their warranty.

Chinese stainless steel, AKA mild steel.

I didn't buy the SS walker muffler for that exact reason. I read a bunch of people who bought SS walker mufflers and they either fell apart or eventually "rusted" through.

I bought the much cheaper Walker muffler since I was on a budget when I was rebuilding my rig. I sprayed the entire thing with two coats of 1200 degree exhaust paint. It's been on for about a year now and is holding up nicely.

That is a great question....there are various grades of stainless steel and the better grades like 304 or 316 are minimally magnetic. The pipes, flanges and muffler body on this Walker are very magnetic....it is a relatively low grade of stainless.....probably more importantly in this case, the aggressive corrosion occurred at the welds. Poor materials and/or workmanship.

I need a new cat-back as well, but am not interested in the Walker at all.
I definitely want a quiet, quality system. I think the Gibson would be too loud. I'd like to hear about the loudness of the borla, but I don't like their tips at all, and am unclear if the exit is rear or side. I've seen videos of rear exit, but the description says side exit. Maybe they changed the exit location like TRD did.
I like the idea of "better flow", but not sure if anything is ACTUALLY gained, and I'm really liking the idea of real quiet exhaust.
My current muffler is the Thrush, and I really like the slightly louder than stock sound, but it's not really a quality muffler, and the my clamp-on install was garbage.
Even though I like it, I'm wondering if I would like stock sound level even more.
Stay off my lawn.

Nothing special. Just off the shelf parts everything fit. And still not rusty and it's quiet.

I have pictures in my 97 repair thread. I think I paid 300-350 when I got it. These pictures are from two weeks ago when I removed it from the wreck to pull engine and trans.
