Mufflers

I'm looking to get a beefier sounding muffler. I like the sound of the flowmaster 40 series but I have no idea on what sizes to get? So any help on sizes and also other recommendations are appreciated.

I was always flowmaster guy, but recently tried a magnaflow after looking at the construction. It "feels" like its built much better, and the exhaust doesn't get blocked by baffles like a flowmaster, rather it is just a straight path with sound attenuating holes.

I'd probably check out Borla too...my buddies seem to like them, but not sure what sets them apart.

Awesome I'll check out the borla and I've also looked into magnaflow. I'm by no means set on one in particular. Whats the difference does the different offsets and outputs make?
I also take it that the inlet and outlet diameters are 2.25"?

Ya when I used the stock piping on my old 4runner I bought 2.25" in/outlets. I would check out this thread if you are considering a magnaflow

Yeah.... looks like magnaflow is out. Im a fan of the flowmasters price

If you like the flowmaster price look into the 50 series big block. Its is suppose to be more of an SUV type of muffler cause it cuts down on interior drone. When I had my magnaflow the interior drone would get annoying but mine was also dumped before the rear axle

this thread is an absolute joke, dont take anything CoB said in that thread with anyseriousness. that can happen with any muffler and he is just over reacting and butt hurt. heck i've personally seen the baffles break free inside Flowmaster mufflers in more than one occasion, on road not even off road.

I even busted a Borla XR-1 muffler up off road, also CoB noted that the packing inside the muffler burnt away? of course it is a glorified glass pack, so is Borla or any other turbo type muffler. they all burn out and get louder, its just the nature of the beast.

i just purchased my first Magnaflow muffler recently, i normally buy Borla but $40 for a muffler is better than $150+ for a muffler and its even stainless steel to boot. i have a different part # than CoB but i have had my muffler for about 4 months now and logged close to 10,000 miles on it with no problems yet.

What part number are you running? Hows it sound, beefy?

I'll try to find the part # Magnaflow I got. 2.5 in and out, and it's center in, offset out.
I got it on e bay for $75 I think. I used to be a Flowmaster guy.....not since I put Manaflows on my Audi, won't buy a Flowmaster anymore.

i have a 4th gen v8 so how it sounds is on my truck is completely irrelevant to you, but i am running 10416 i think. i cannot recall exactly but its just a glorified stainless steel glass pack, much like many more expensive muffler like Borla or Bassani or even Corsa but at a third of the cost, which is why i decided to give it a go. If it fails suddenly in the near future i will let everyone on the forum know. however i feel that is highly unlikely....

I hate exhaust drone. That sound clip above had tons of it. I went with Dynomax VT muffler. It cost me $75. All Stainless steel, life time warranty.

It has great sound when you step on the throttle, but when you cruise- silence...

Check out Waketek's? Build thread. He just had a Flowmaster 50 series installed. He has a sound clip as well. I think it sounds great, and it's pushing me to go with one when the time comes (which is soon). I think we need to get offset in and out, but not 100% sure...maybe PM and ask him.

Than you I'll likely buy it off ebay as well, then have a local shop put it on for $60-$80?

Thats sounds pretty nice. Thats somewhere along the lines where I want mine to be.

I actually really like it. Not too throaty but still has some beef to it. I actually wouldnt mind it being silent at cruise, I also kinda like that.

Will do. I looked through some build threads but some are more organized than others. I like the price of the flowmaster and the magnaflows the best even though I've heard good stuff about the borlas.

It is pretty bad but I think it has more to do with the acoustics of the 4Runner cabin because the drone disappears almost completely if the windows are rolled down, opposed to rolled up. Changing where the muffler is located an the length of the pipe can also effect the exhaust "drone" I simply cut off the stock resonator and welded in the new muffler in place of the stock muffler. Def not a performance mod. It was strictly done for sound and cost effectiveness.

Also I can't hear drone at all in that video, but it definitely does drone pretty bad under 2,000rpms

Right now I'm kinda sitting between the flowmaster 40 and the dynomax you have Singtoe. I just want something deeper than stock but I dont want people thinking I'm driving a Dodge Ram when I go through the neighborhood.
