I have a K&N FIPK II on the way, may be able to install this weekend.
Well, it arrived and it's installed. The road trip starts the middle of this week, so it will have roughly 1,500 miles on it when I get back. Will be very interesting to see how it performs.

Around town, it's been very good, but not enough miles to draw any conclusions.

How was the trip?

So far, so good.

Drove 636 miles yesterday from Little Rock to Memphis for work then on to Bloomington, IL. Truck did great -- shifting seems a bit firmer, probably because of the ECU re-learning everything.

Vandert, you were right -- you can only hear a difference with the K&N when accelerating under load. Otherwise, you'd never know it was there from the sound.

The truck has always been lots of fun to drive, and it's great to have plenty of power when you floor it and pass a semi on the interstate.

For mileage, I filled up twice, both times with 87 octane, same as always -- 20.06 mpg for the Memphis stop (had a bunch of city miles on it) and 21.31 mpg when I filled up in St. Louis. Not bad considering the cruise was set at 70 mph, A/C running, and I-55 in Missouri has lots of good-sized hills between Cape Girardeau and St. Louis.

It's interesting that the eye candy was a bit high at 22.0 mpg but the range was low at 405 miles.

This weekend is family stuff not far from Chicago, then back to Bloomington for a few days. Will report back when the trip is finished.

OK, just finished up from the trip.....can't say that the K&N made a significant difference in gas mileage. Generally, the mileage was between 19 and 21.5, with the worst being city driving on a tank of 10% ethanol, the best being all highway driving with the cruise set at 70.

Had a couple hundred pounds of stuff (drove to pick up a cast-iron kettle that we couldn't ship), one other person, and the A/C on nearly the whole time.

I've gotten similar mileage on a trip with the stock air intake, so, can't say that I've seen the same mileage improvements as you, Vandert.

I'm selling a K&N FIPK Kit for an 03-04 4.7 V8 4Runner. I bought the kit thinking it would fit my 05 but it doesn't. I will sell it for $250 including S&H. If anyone is interested send me a pm.

you would be ahead to post a NEW thread in the classifieds section telling that rather than attempting to hijack someone else's thread...which is usually considered bad form.

you might also go back and delete the posts that were duplicates...

EDIT: so I see you did post in the classifieds...you should prolly put the pictures there and remove these posts...7 posts (5 on this thread and 2 on your classifieds thread...Hmmm....)

K&N mpg loss???

I have had the FIPK system for about 3 months on my V-6 2wd and the most I can get out of my mpg average is 17.8. When installing the system the foam gasket tore in half and I pieced it back together to make it fit, would this hinder my mpg performance? If not this what else could possibly cause me to lose gas mileage?

Thanks in advance

Any change in driving habits? Maybe with the agressive sound you're driving more aggressively?

Unless there are gaps in the MAF gasket, I don't think that would be the problem.

I made a 3 1/2 hour drive yesterday...

on the interstate and my average went from 17.5 to 17.7 thorught the duration of the drive using cruise control at 75 mph. I t seems like it should have gone up more than that?

Comes back on at about 107 or so. Don't take the runner up there much, thats what my VW is for:)

I will definately keep running the Mobil 1 and Intake, nothing but smiles from me:)

Hi Guys! I appreciate this tread. I'm learning a lot from it.

Why does the engine cut off at 110 to 113mph? When the cutoff does occur, what happens to the power steering and brakes? And how does it come back at 107 mph? Does it just come on or are you restarting it while coasting in neutral or something?

Being a noobie at this stuff, I would think that something is going wrong with the engine.

Thanks,
Gene

Re: Re: Shuts off 113

They're probably talking about a speed governor on the Runner kicking on at 110 to make sure you dont exceed that speed. But thats just my hypothesis.

Your correct in your assumption

The engine top speed govener kicks and and shuts off fuel to the engine, all accessories and power to the brakes etc... stays fully functional. The fuel shuts off, or in the newer vehicles they might do it a little different due to the technology advances but it doesn't hurt the engine. Just like if you floor your truck it will bounce off the red line, this is the rev limiter. It will quickly shut off fuel and then throw it back on creating a bouncing effect. It's ok to try it but it isn't failsafe so don't sit thier and bounce the redline for a few minutes or anything.

When the engine shuts off at top speed it just slows you down a little and then lets you keep going if you want, but it pushes you away from the top speed a little.

The first time I topped out a vehicle it was a Ford Fullsize Truck at about 95 and it scared the shit out of me, but this one does it a little differently, it's not so abrubt. I've bounced rev limiters and top speeds on pretty much every car now since and that was over 10 years now. I'm on the Bahn over here so it's legal, and I race alot, not just drag but road and SCCA too. Thats why I always have a little sport compact or mustang around too.

Hope this info helped, if it wasn't clear and understanding for you let me know and I'll rephrase.

Vandert - did you happen to take any baseline hp/torque figures with your stock setup then with the K&N with the same conditions on a dyno.

I appreciate your "by the seat of your pants" reflections but would be more interested in some statistical data if you have any.

Were your mpg calculations based on the onboard display or some other process?

explanation of engine cutoff

Techenigma and Vandert,

Thank you for your information. It was, as usual from this board, very helpful.

Vandert, have you had any problems in very cold weather (freezing temps) with this new air intake system?

Best Regards,
Gene
