Multi function display problem

Hello everybody.
I purchased 05 V8 4R Sport in GG.
Whenever I fill my gas tank completely, the 'range' option of multi-function display shows me 200 miles (sometimes 165 miles). However fuel gauge needle shows that the tank is full.
Do you think I should go to the dealer and get this checked, or may be it will reset to normal on its own.
I get more than 310 miles on my full tank which I figured by resetting trip meter. Hope this message makes sense, excuze me if its not clear.

Maybe the computer is just confused a bit. Before you take it in, try resetting the multi-function display. Give it a couple of tanks of gas to see if it makes a difference.

I had the same problem on my Montero. It shows me range of 575-625km, when I usually made 750-800km on a tank. I tried t reset it, and then went to the dealer. Nothing, nobody can do anything with it. So I just stop paying attention to this numbers. My present 4Runner works fine. The best way is to let it work out with a couple of fuel tanks and then if it wouldn't help, go to the service.
 
I found that there is no valve/lid in the 'neck' of gas tank. All I do is unwind the gas tank lid to fill gas, and I can see gas in the gas tank!!!!!!!
Is this normal.
I think most vehicles have a valve like lid in the neck of the gas tank (which needs to be pushed open by gas pump pipe). Am I missing this valve?

Most of the newer cars are like that. Somewhere between '98 and 2002 it seems most cars changed to filler necks without the little flapper valve.

It makes it easier to top up that way, because you can see the fuel as it comes up in the neck.
 
Go thru a couple of tanks first. My range used to display 426 miles during the 1st month that I had her (during the time that I was breakin' her in). As I started to drive more aggressively as I usually do, the range started to drop to 412, then 405, then 395 miles. For the longest time, it would only show 395 and I thought I wasn't filling her up completely, but no matter how much "extra" gas I give her after the pump stops on its own, the display still shows 395. It's the ecu/computer that adjusts the range calibration based on your driving style. With gas prices being so high now, I try to drive more conservatively nowadays and the range shows 413 miles (versus 395). So my guess is that either your 4R was driven extremely hard during test drives before you bought it (thus poor mpg; it may take a little while for your ecu to adjust the range level back to normal) or the calibration is messed up and needs to be fixed.

You do realize that your computer only estimates those number of miles based on your mpg figure. As you drive to get your next fill up reset the mpg as you coast down the street and into the gas station. If you can get the computer to spit out a high number based on your coast and then kill the engine at the pump, your computer will reset at a high number. Personally, I never reset the mpg b/c I want to see what the number is year to year.

Good point, I've never thought of resetting the MPG reading right before a fill up. I usually reset the MPG right after a fill up to see the changes from tank to tank. I always write down the comp's mpg reading and compare it to my own calculation. Since you don't reset your AVG MPG reading often, is the number more accurate? Let's say if you kept track of 10 fill-ups and the total miles driven, is the reading more accurate or a closer number to the actual hand calculated figure? BTW, the range can decrease by 1 mile although you've driven 3 miles and vice versa depending on your driving (i.e- cruising or accelerating).

I would guess that the longer you go without resetting the mpg, the more acurate your reading would be. It is just better for me to know my overall mpg then that of tank to tank. Sometimes I drive on the Highway more than other times. I am after an overall average of my performace. Simply too obvious to me to know that if I drive in town a lot on a tank, it will be lower. I reset mine every oil change.
