Multi mode to j shift transfercase wiring

I’m in the process of swapping from a 2000 limited multi mode j shift transfercase. Kind of going off this thread a bit but sort of lost on what was done to accomplish a working front diff/dash lights.

Seems like a relay was used to connect a select few wires from the harness that went into the 4wd computer? Can I just use an Amazon relay? Specific amount of pins/wires?

The wires that were circled seem like the wires I need to tap into: v2(green/red), v4(light green), ADD (black/blue), ind1(green/black), ind2(green/white), can’t read last one (brown/yellow).

Ok so now my truck won’t start lol.. there is about 8 wires (3 connectors) that I had to leave unplugged from the old transfercase. I don’t think this could have anything to do with why my truck won’t start could it?

Edit: disregard my starter was full of water and corroded inside.

If you want to keep the 4WD computer, you have to fool it into thinking that the actuators are still there doing their thing. I bet the relay(s) was there to tell the 4WD computer that it was "shifted" in or out of 4WD based on the positions switch signals. I don't have more information, since I never did it myself.

I don’t specifically care about keeping the 4wd computer, I just care about the dash lights coming on/off and the front diff actuating when I shift it to 4.

Now I’m waiting on a new starter till I can mess with this, hopefully by next week. I bought a box of relays off Amazon, see what I can come up with.

Be aware: there are many, many different kinds of relays. 12VDC coils, 120/60 hz coils. NO contacts, NC contacts, multi-throw contacts...

If you can imagine it, there's a relay for it. SO: be wary of using a relay with the wrong configuration. Just because you got a bunch-in-a-bag from whatever source doesn't necessarily mean you have the right ones that you need for this project. If I weren't such a lazy SOB, I could draw you a schematic for your truck, but I'm just too friggen lazy these days I may be able to make some suggestions for you though. what year, engine, transmission, and so forth would make it a lot easier though.

Good to know about the relays, looking at the diagram for the 2000 manual 4wd should show what kind of relay it was maybe? If you get around to it I’d be forever grateful and maybe make a Timmy the toolman video with it and give you a shout out haha. If not no worries I’ll figure it out somehow. 2000, 5vzfe, limited automatic, originally had multi mode push button jshift tcase changed to standard jshift tcase. These are the diagrams I was able to find online without paying for anything.

Edit: now I’m thinking if I want it to work 100% perfectly OEM I should buy the oem relay with a pigtail.

Yes, though you are missing the second page of the multimode setup.

If you can get an ADD relay with pigtail, that'll get you close - though you won't be able to get dash feedback of whether the ADD has engaged without running an extra wire back from the engine bay.

If it was me, I'd try to fool the 4WD ECU first - but I'm not 100% sure it would work.

Well I just ordered a used ADD relay off eBay, no pigtail though. Just going to use female spade connectors with heat shrink all the way to the tip until I can get a pigtail. I have a picture of a few of the wires coming out the back of one installed in a vehicle, also have a friend who has one in his truck. So hopefully I can figure out the wiring pretty easily. What wire would need to be ran from the engine bay, I don’t mind running wires.


Seems there are 5 wires coming out of this relay. 2x black w/white strip, green w/ red strip, light green, blue.

I have 1x black w/ white strip, green w/red stripe, light green.

Do I split the black w/ white strip into 2x? Seems like maybe use the black w/blue strip in place of the blue?

Don’t make fun of my hand writing haha.. Last 2 questions I have are do I just split the black white strip wire into 2? Do I need to hook up the brown yellow strip wire at all? Seems like it’s the LO indicator switch.

Welp the way I hooked it up did not work at all. Dang. Anyone with any help would be super appreciated.

Alrighty I think I got it figured out. Had to use a cheapo Amazon relay for now. I also found the missing page which was exactly what I needed lol.

So I’m using these wires: grey, green w/ red strip, light green, green w/black strip, green w/white strip, black w/ white strip, and black w/ blue strip.
