Multi Terrain Select (Crawl Control) Demo

Some sweet multi terrain select in action. This was taken on a lake bed roughly an hour ago. Turn up the volume to hear the non-believers (jeep owners) in the background.

The "sand, mud, & dirt" setting. It's amazing how it works to control power to the wheels with traction and it's like the whole vehicle shakes it's way right out of the hole...

There are a lot of YouTube videos from the Middle East of guys using crawl control to unstuck Land Cruisers from some deep, soft sand.

I would guess that it could. The benefit of Crawl Control is letting the CPU manage throttle to a very low speed that is hard to do with an automatic transmission. However, with careful application, I think you could probably get pretty close to the same effect. For example:

Seeing these videos is always awesome. I know I tried to go up a sandy hill and Atrac basically kept that from happening. Needed wheel spin to keep climbing and it wasn't having it. I'd love to see this demo doing a sandy hill. Man thats cool to see it climb out of that hole though!

I tried a hill that day, but in all complete honesty I could not get it stuck for the life of me. I would dig the rear in and when I switched to 4-hi, it would just pop out and keep climbing....

Yes. ATRAC is the same thing. Both systems act as traction control using the ABS system. Think of MTS as a way to adjust the level of intrusiveness of ATRAC. It allows you to choose more or less wheel spin (how quickly and aggressively the system reacts) based on your conditions.

This is a situation where mechanical lockers really help. The brake action can suck the power out and often does a throttle cut as well. The tundra version has no throttle effect IIRC, it only uses brakes but allows full power so it acts a lot more like a posi diff under this type of condition. I don't know for sure how to get that similar performance in a 4runner without any throttle cut.

Luckily I never got stuck, Just sure as heck wasn't going up the hill. Atrac just cut all power it seemed. My buddy was watching and said there would be hardly any wheel spin, spin stop, spin stop. Im gonna have to try that hill again with A-trac off and see how it does with wheel spin. Hills like that I miss the '78 Cherokee Chief with Original Quadratac. That thing could go ANYWHERE with a blip of the 4barrel Carb.

Pure speculation, but I feel A-trac is on the aggressive side, so moguls or rocks. A-trac seems to hunt for maximizing available traction at the expense of momentum.
