multimode tc swap behind 98 5speed?

My 99 auto had multimode and I really liked the pushbutton AWD/unlocked TC for winter driving over the j-shift locked case in my current 98. this seems like it shouldnt be that hard of a switch if I have a 99 donor to grab drive shafts off of. even if I have to get new driveshafts it would still be worth it as I can't stand the binding driving from snow covered to plowed roads. Whats it take to add 99-00 multimode tcase to a 98 5speed?

I've only done minor research on a tacobox doubler but that seems like a smart add on in the future. Has anyone ever put one of those between a R150 manual and a 99-00 multimode transfer case? Seems like that would be a real swiss army knife set up.

Thank you
Justin

I had pondered that same thought for a bit while planning out my doubler install (NWF Eco-crawler, not Marlin Taco), but after looking at a multimode and measuring things I determined that the multimode actuator that sticks out of the back end of the transfer case would be into the front end of the gas tank with the doubler installed.

I even have an aux tank on mine (where the spare tire used to be), but I don't want to remove the stock tank. The aux tank is for range, not belly clearance.

So I just dropped the idea for my truck.

Doable if you don't do the doubler. Doable with the doubler if you move the gas tank.

I had looked into the swap once as I had a 2000 4WD multimode transmission in my backyard and I also have a 98. The wiring is very different so you'd need to swap engine wire harness as well as the ECU. Then you'd have to swap out any sensors that were changed from 98 to 99 (there are a few, MAF being one) and then the parts that the sensors go in, such as the intake box. The list just got longer and longer so I didn't do it, even with an entire parts vehicle.

I would advise against that only because of the amount of changes that are required like gamefreakgc listed. I have both J shifter and limited transfers in my fleet of 3rd gens.

I actually prefer the J shifter myself as they have less things that can go wrong with the system as a whole. Plus its all basically manual linkage No actuators that fail etc.

there was a build thread here somewhere that did a 5spd swap into his limited and kept his transfer case, can’t remember the guys name though

I always thought the older style multimode that has the J shift with the button on the shifter might be easier to swap, I’ve considered doing it but I don’t know if it’s worth the effort to search out a relatively uncommon transfer case and do the swap

the 1999-2000 Limited has the multi-mode J-shift tc.

This doesn't make sense to me. I could see it being an eci issue if I were changing transmissions, as autos and manual so have different needs but what would the computer care whether the TC was locked or unlocked What does the computer do on a manual trans truck that would interfere? Did Toyota make a 5 speed in 99 or 20 with the multimode TC? Where could I find wiring diagrams to compare these model trucks. I could stare for hours trying to find how the pictures differ.

The automatic transmission changes shift points and pressures when the transfer case is in low to attempt to control shift harshness and jarring.

3rd Gens never came from the factory with a manual transmission and multimode transfer case.

That'd be me.

I think the issue here is it's a 98 he's trying to swap a multi-mode case into, the multi-mode case wasn't introduced until 99. While the multi-mode case operates mainly from the separate 4WD ECU, the main ECU does communicate (at least somewhat) with the 4WD ECU, which the 98 main ECU was not designed to do. But who knows maybe it'll work without changing ECUs? I had to swap my ECU with a M/T ECU (which was also not designed to work with a multi-mode t-case) when I did my swap and my multi-mode t-case functions without issue.

Looking at a 2000 EWD, it does have a semi shared circuit with the ECM, but it looks like it's for the ADD position switch to let the ECM and 4wd computer to know that the ADD is engaged.

There's a speed signal from the combination meter to the 4wd computer to disable transfer case shifting above 100 km/h. A couple circuits between the 4wd computer and the combination meter for indicator lights as well. 4wd computer also controls the vsv for the front add so OP will need those components and wiring to convert over from the j shift controlled method which is a relay. There's a good chance the transfer case shifting will disable if it doesn't see that.

Also, keep in mind that with the 99-00 multimode transfer case the shift lever doesn't mechanically shift 2HI/4HI/4HI Locked. The shift lever only physically controls the high/low range shifting.

01-02 transfer case is a different shift pattern and controls. I don't have access to an 01-02 EWD to see what it requires for that system to work. It could require even more inputs because of the VSC/TRAC system in 01-02.

2000 EWD: Dropbox - 2000 4Runner Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD383U) - Printable - Simplify your life Section 176 is for multimode transfer case.

Wiring should be able to be "fooled" using a 99/00 4WD ECU (not engine ECU, the ECU that controls the transfer case) in a '98. Driveshafts likely won't swap directly since the MT is a different length than the AT. It should be doable, but it won't be easy unless you are already comfortable with fairly advanced wiring. As others have said, a doubler in front of it would start to run in to gas tank crossmember interference.

Multi-mode transfer cases were used in the ROW Hilux Surfs in the first half of the generation...

Yeah if this was a 99 J shift to 99 multi-mode it would be much simpler. The sub-generation wiring changes from 96-98 to 99-00 are pretty extensive. To make things worse, Toyota also swapped around wiring colors so what would be one color on the 98 isn't the same wire in a 99 making comparing wiring diagrams even more complicated.

I guess I was naive to think that with so many 4runners build someone would have done this swap. I don't mind trouble shooting and I'm not bad with electrical but I don't know that I want to pioneer this procedure. I was already planning on tricking the electronics for the front ADD actuator anyway so I can have 2Low for backing my trailer up my steep driveway. I just wanted multimode for winter driving an it would be a perfect swiss army knife.

You can do the swap if you wish.. Nobody is stopping you. Just other users looked into what was all involved and decided not to do it. :)
