T-case Differences (all years of 3rd gens).. transfer case, AWD, multi-mode

If my “friend” was looking to purchase a used transfer case, how would “he” know if its from a 01/02? Lets say the shifter is not present but still attached to the tranny. “His” is a 2001. Any markings to look for? Thanks. I will tell my “friend” what yall say.
I have a similar situation. The transfer case has cratered on my 1999 Limited, Auto, unlocked 4WD. What other years are plug and play without modification of wiring?
Page 1 of this thread appears to show that 1999 and 2000 Limited have the same one. I’m just wondering if other 4WD shift patterns would still bolts onto mine as a replacement.
Shift patterns are different for different years of Limiteds. The only plug and play transfer case will be from another Limited 99-00

Somebody can tell me what options we have with asfin a340f?
What about the tcase from fj cruiser, or others. It will be fantastic to have VF4B from manual fj.

How’s it going guys, hope to get some proper education and guidance from you all! I am a newbie to 4runners and I have been trying my best to read before I ask questions! Anyways yesterday I purchased my very first 4runner, a 1997 SR5! Today I was checking out the 4x4 and noticed my knob only read “L4 - N - H” no button on the side either. my question is if that’s the correct transfer case shifter? I’ve see a lot of 97 SR5 4runners with the “J-shift” versus mine so now I’m just sorta lost, not sure if I’m overreacting (which I’m sure I am) well any help is appreciated and I apologize if this sounds confusing! Thank you in advance for any type of help! (Below I attached a picture of what my shift (Not my picture but ideally identical) knob looks like to help clarify. Again I’m just trying to make sure my shifter is correct for my 4runner

Can the shifter only move in a straight line or in a j shift pattern?

If you have no button on the side then I think someone installed a Sequoia knob by accident.

I tried shift down (which worked) then back to N which was fine but it didn’t want to shift straight up and I didn’t want to force anything, knowing my luck I break something, you think someone put the wrong knob on it?

Some more pictures of my 97 SR5 Transfer case Knob, apologizes if it’s scattered, still new to this forum lol hope to find out if my knob is wrong so I can purchase the correct one. Shifting only works to go down and back fo neutral I have not tried the “j shift” motions - any help is appreciated

Does neutral on the transfer case allow the vehicle to roll freely?
Take a picture of the back of the transfer case and upload it here. If there is a motor then you don't have a regular j shift transfer case.

Why don't you try shifting it in a "j shift" motion? That should give you your answer real quick.

Start it up, put the trans in neutral, shift the whole j pattern. You will know if you're in low range once it is in drive. Just from your interior color I can tell you this is a J-shifter.
