My 1997 SR5 build and repair thread

I know right?
We used to have a great auto electrical shop here. Staff of 12, breaking down units, sandblasting, testing armatures, fields. Change out the brushes, contacts, etc. And reselling various levels units, from premium to cheap.
Now, last time I visited, only 2 guys there unpacking shipping boxes of already rebuilt alternators and starters.
The shop doesn't have the same following they had before when they did the work themselves.
Could be the owner retired and no one wanted to continue the business? Could be the price of labor? Could be declining demand for services?
All and all sad all the way around in choices for the consumer.

I am hoping things change for the Better...:)

It’s official, I just rusted through my passenger rear upper shock mount.

And so it begins……

How bad is that area?....

Use large washers to weld it on if the area good enough...:)

You were looking into outboarding a while back...:) That works. I mostly just beef up or replace those plates.

The issue is to fix those plates, you better off to pull the body off the frame to change them. :O.

I’m not playing that game. Cause I’ll see a ton of other things that need dealt with and I lack a lift.

It's completely understandable. :) I did one buy cutting a hole in the floor to fix a sping shock plate... :/ pre lift days. Then just weld the floor back together.. :D

And so it begins…..outboarding the rear shocks.

I was hoping it would have shipped today. It did not so it won’t be on the road before I start work next Wednesday.

Yes always a bummer when parts don't ship. It's like Christmas for us adults...:)

Sorry to see the rust, but I'm glad you won't ever have to mess with that upper shock mount again. Hopefully it gets to you asap.

It is slowly becoming one thing after another.

After I welded the lower control arm mount on I noticed it wasn’t looking too good. It was just a matter of time. Ugg

Yes. You will chase the rust around for a while. Eventually the PA chrome wins. The rear section of your frame is thin.. How are the body crossmembers doing?

If they are rusting away its time to start looking for replacement. Rockers are one things. Floor crossmembers are the end.

Your I beam and tire carrier maybe about done too. That's the state my 1998 was in at 2017.. :(

This is what it took to get home from TSC this afternoon. My starter died.

I knew this situation was a possibility given the starter I had on the shelf as a spare. And it failed exactly like the last new napa starter failed under warranty.

I’m sure I can pull the contact cover and pull the coil armature out and hopefully it’s just under greased.

My replacement upper shock mounts have not shipped yet and my inspection is due this month. Ugg

The armature of the start coil is seized. I’m guessing a broken spring. I’ll see if it’s worth while trying to fix it……

Edit: the new napa starter is an exact replica of the Denso. The contact plunger was seized. I pulled the plunger out of the starter that wasn’t kicking out at engine run.

All galled up and no grease on it.

Well, Project #1 is done. The Frankenstein starter is in and the Toy Lives once again.

It’s one less thing I have to do Monday when I start my 4 day off stretch.

Hopefully Monday the upper shock mounts will get relocated to the frame.
