Oil Spray

Can you share more info. on the oil spray when you get it done for an ill-informed southwesterner moving to the north? Great insight on your build, thx. Keep it coming.

LOL truth. I feel you're pain! I've had mine out in the snow ONCE and I literally spent 45 mins in the car wash (and $30) rinsing the living hell out of the undercarriage. Then I limped it home from the car wash on still un-plowed city backstreets so as not to get it "seasoned" on the way home from the car wash.

I hate salt. I hate rust. And it's good to know that I am not the only one who loses sleep over it! haha

Stay strong brotha. I did the same last Monday when we got our first heavier snow fall. Rinsed the undercarriage at the coin op, then came home and did a rinseless wash and a bit of wax at home. The next morning, I walk out of the gym to see a full on blizzard with wet, slushy roads. Wasn't even in the forecast. There's no doubt it's a losing battle, but still one worth fighting!

Sure. A friend of mine owns a rustproofing company that specifically does oil spraying on vehicles. That gives you an idea of how common it is up here. Essentially they put you up on a hoist and spray everything down with a coating of oil (similar to penetrating oil I guess). It's thin enough to reach the deeper spots but then gums up and sticks to the chassis when it dries. It's very helpful, but still doesn't make your rig invincible when it comes to road salt. The best advice I can give you: just don't move up north lol.

Fluid Film is a great off the shelf aerosol spray that is wax/oil based. I've been using it for years with great results.

What size wheel spacers are you running, if any? Also what is the width of your wheels

Idk how you do it. Your as OCD as myself. I don't think I could handle it as a car guy. I guess I'd always just buy old trucks from the south and switch them out every few years. And expect them to be worthless at the end of the day.

Maybe that's why you are always selling your projects so fast. Smaller window of value in a northern truck...

Ever install the Thorley headers?

Yep they've been on for the last month and a half or so. So far so good. Sorry I haven't gotten around to updating this in a while. I'm going to try to get a few pics of where it's at currently for this thread. Still trying to decide how I want to go about documenting the detailing and enhancement process this spring. Pics or video?

Wow. Just found this post. I have a 93 MR2 5SFE. Plan on a 2gr swap when the stock engine gets tired. I also have the V8 4Runner because I tow and have found your review on the Thorley headers very informative.
Any chance you dyno'd your 4Runner yet? I would like to see some numbers not posted by the manufacturer.

Sorry I haven't been around here much lately. I didn't dyno it because I only did the headers to fix the cracked manifold, not for power. I'm sure the stock exhaust and cats are going to hinder any hp gains in my case anyways. I noticed very little difference on the butt dyno with just the headers and K&N filter, but with the addition of the HC filter delete it feels like it has more mid range now. I think the ecu is starting to adjust to the new airflow because it feels a bit faster lately too.

Bottom line, if you want the headers for performance but you're keeping the stock exhaust, don't bother. If you're using them to fix cracked manifolds, they're great! If you want to make power, you need to pair the headers with a proper exhaust and possibly delete the cats to make it worthwhile in my opinion.

Hi from the other end of the province. Just found this thread. You've got a few nice vehicles, can't remember the last time I saw an MR2. The 4runner is looking great so far.

Interesting to see a discussion about rust-proofing on here :canada:

Thanks! I've got some more content to add to this thread when I get a chance.

Did you happen to find where the exhaust leak was? I assume it's on the passenger side as usual.

Yup, passenger side, inner side of the weld on the runner. With the manifold off you could easily see daylight through the crack. Driver's side failed first but had already been replaced.

Are you glad you went with the V8?

Very glad! If a V6 was the only option for the 4th gen, I wouldn't own one. Sure, on paper they're somewhat similar but I've driven both and in the real world a V6 in this type of vehicle just doesn't cut it. The V8 is better in every way aside from MPG.

Once you outfit and rig-up a V6 the MPG benefit goes away almost entirely.
