My 2007 v6 4runner engine blew

Engine is a goner.

i was out Christmas shopping for my parents and my 2007 4.0 v6 4runner was running fine. i hit a stop light about 3 miles away from home (i didn't punch it or fire off the line just casually drove), then i heard about 3 ticks(sounded just like engine knock), wondering what it was then, BOOM!(it sounded like someone smacked my engine with a sledge hammer) smoke flowed out of my hood and from under my car. i have no clue what happened, i believe one of my engine rods blew out. when i pulled over half a second after the boom happened i popped my hood and saw oil everywhere and metal debris/chunks around my engine. well its at the toyota dealership and hopefully it will get fixed with my 7 year 100k mile warranty(thats why i bought it =) and i hope to learn the cause of this whole thing.

I'm only 18 and just got the car from my parents about a month ago. needless to say I'm pissed. but thanks to my dads VW toureg TDI he towed me from the side of the road straight to the dealership.

well if anyone is interested in how this whole thing goes down ill try to keep a constant report on whats going on and what exactly happened to cause my engine to run up in smoke and metal debris around my engine when i stopped to check it out.

i will also try to take pictures if i can when i go in to the dealership next.

Wouldn't have happened with a V8 :) (going back to the v6 vs. v8 performance thread...)

also if there is anyone who knows of reason why this would happen ideas why would be great but i am baffled. also another detail is that the oil and metal debris was only on the passenger side of the engine under the exhaust ports.

also forgot to add it only has 35k miles on it

That really sucks, sorry to hear. Hopefully it works out regarding warranty and repair.

Did you do oil changes yourself or has it been dealer serviced for everything?
 
Damn, dude. Sorry to hear about your Runner's big boom.

Keep us updated on te details! This is VERY unlike a 'yota engine, unless it wasnt cared for properly, dash warning lights were ignored, or maybe it just falls under that classification of "sh*t happens".

Either way, youre covered with the warrantee, so your mind should be at ease.

Update the thread regularly! I'll personally be very interested in finding out just what it was that did the V6 in.

As for the V6 vs. V8, I gotta V8 2003 Sport Edition and im calling around to the 4 dealerships in my area to see which will do the 90k service the cheapest (the dreaded timing-belt-replacement) with a new water pump as a cherry on top.

Wow, that sucks! Like you said, you should be covered. You mentioned it had 35K on the clock, was the engine well maintained? Any signs that this motor "did" anything in the past? These V6s (1GR-FE) just don't blow up. Something is up! Please keep us posted!

I'm very interested on hearing a follow-up. I've been a Toyota owner since '81 and am on my 6th Toyota with my 4th gen and still have a '97 Camry in service. Of my 6 Toyotas, I've put over 1,000,000 miles on those engines and never had any significant problem.
 
it has been well maintained
last oil change was from dealership
no warning lights were on when it happened or prior to when it happened
and i haven't had any problems in the past with the engine before at all. and oil changes are just about on the button for every 3-5k miles depending on weather and how the mileage is put on.

ya i would have to agree with the fact that these Toyota's engines are bullet proof.

also there are absolutely no modifications on the engine or the car other that new tires(265/70) and yak racks. other than that the car is stock

yes the only reason i was told it wouldn't get fixed under warranty is if it was caused by a road hazard.

i should be getting word back from Toyota in a few days or a week (because of Christmas) if it will be under warranty.
 
Wow, very strange indeed. Oil all over, so it had oil in it. Road hazard? Even if you popped a line or punctured something, you'd have sounds, smells, and lights well before catastrophic failure. I'll be very interested in what they find, thanks for posting up.
 
Sorry to hear about the failure... it seems pretty odd that it happened at all, especially without warning. Keep us posted!

so i found out today that there is a hole under my crankshaft. they still don't know why it happened or why. but i have to submit a bunch of paper work and stuff for the warranty, and with Christmas in 2 days they wont be able to work on it for a week or so.

so merry Christmas and ill try to keep you all up to date.

Well, sounds like they are working with you? I'm assuming the hole under the crankshaft was manufacturing defect or something other than your fault, right?

I had a 96' Tacoma 3.4 4x4 prior to my 05' 4runner and I personally put 240k miles on that old truck. I traded it with 284k miles....HARD miles I might add!
On a trip to Dallas one time, my a/c went out along w/ power steering. I pulled off the road thinking I broke a belt. After deciding it was more serious than that, I was towed (thank you AAA) 65 miles into Dallas to a large dealership. I left my truck there and got a call the next morning saying my CRANKSHAFT BROKE! I almost cried. I was in college at the time, since my dad covered the payments until I graduated, I called him up to help me out. After the repair along w/ tune up, trans, plugs, and such and a $4k bill later, I was back on the road. Bottom line was I am convinced there was a "bubble" in the metal, or some other kind of defect in the crankshaft that caused my failure. That just doesn't happen with Toyotas. I called Toyota....they almost laughed, and I can't say I blame them- I had 145k at the time. Sorry to ramble, hope your ride gets fixed soon!
