my 4th Gen CB Mount w/pics

I was trying to figure out how to mount my CB without hacking up anything in my truck. I had an idea for mounting it overhead, and I figured I would just give it a shot.

Please note, It is in primer right now, and the lights & switch in the picture are just PSed in for effect. There are a few things I would have done different, and may do in the future, but I have test fit it, and it works fine, I even built a custom harness to allow it to be swapped in and out with my factory unit. FYI, if you decide you want to build one of these, there is plenty of room to add Home Link and or the sun roof switches. I may be adding another 12v power outlet to this one before I smooth and paint it (undecided).

I will post more pictures of the harness and the finished mount when my lights and switch come in. I am torn between adding a 12v power outlet (for my NAV) or a USB power outlet for my phone........WWYD?

I tried doing this same thing, but my radio is to big (cobra wx st) I thought about getting a smaller unit, Ill wait to see how you like the finished product

I thought about doing both the USB and the 12v Power, I may still do it.....?

I would love to be able to mount my Cobra BT that I got for Christmas, but fact is.....the darn thing is a monster, I found a compact model for a fair price to test the project. Most of the compacts are roughly 4.5 by 7.25 (body 6.5) so I made it to fit what ever I could find. It turns out I cut my length a little to large (about 1/4 inch) so I will either have to live with it or weld it up and smooth it down.

I will get installed pictures up as soon as the rest of my parts come in, I will also include a bill of materials for anyone who may wish to do the same mod. Word of warning: I used 14ga hot rolled, I contoured it by hand and then broke out the rough shape with a Parana iron worker. This has turned out to be much more involved than I had thought. I may be taking them to Rocktek and seeing if they can produce them for a fair price.

Still in primer, but now I am thinking about painting or powder-coating it black to match the CB. I figured it would look better than painting it grey to match the truck because the CB, light grommets, and switch bezel are all black anyway. Open to opinions.

the pics are a few views, one looks strange but it is the view of the CB from the dome light area. The mount I made fits the curve of the roof and the recessed liner well, and once I make the hardware match it is really very snug. There should be no problem plugging and un-plugging accessories if I install power outlets.

Thanks guys, I still have some work to do on it, but I wanted to bolt it up and see if I happy with the fit. I a happy to report; you cannot even see the CB in the mirror, not even a little, it hugs the roof line very well. Lights and switch will be in next week, I will post final pics then.

Well, I got the thing installed, and I am happy to say it works. I did not run the CB cable yet because I do not have a mount installed. I picked an led light that has 3 diodes per light and It gives of more than the factory amount of light.

I took a 14ga hot rolled steel and cut a rough shape out of it with our Iron Worker. Then I rolled it into the contour of the OEM console. I then marked and cut a rectangular hole based on the CB manufactures specs (I could have cut it ½ inch shorter). On the back side I marked out where the CB, lights, switch, and power outlets would mount. I then punched out some small tabs for the CB mount and welded them on. The last part I I had to add to the plate its-self were the tabs to hold it to the roof liner. (SEE PIC)

One issue I had was finding hardware that fit and look good enough to be seen every day. I installed #8 push in plastic inserts in the roof of the truck (where the console clipped in previously). It takes 2 ¾ inch screws to reach the plastic nuts from the plate so I had to trim down some 3” screws. I also had to shave the heads of the screws to make them more pleasing to the eye. (SEE PIC)

I made a custom harness from the original console plug so that if I wanted to replace the CB with a factory console in the future I could simply plug it back in.

Here is the final product installed and working.(less the CB handset)

Supply list.
3” #8 stainless bolts
2x ¾ inch led 2 wire lights (Clear)
¾ inch switch (3pin with led light or 2 pin without)
12x12 inch chunk of 14ga steel
Compact CB (no larger than 7x2x4.5 LxHxW)
1 foot black 14ga wire
1 foot red 14ga wire
Solder and terminals (by preference)
