My $5 mod in 5 mins.

2020 TRD Off Road Premium. This mod does NOT work. The wiring harness in the 2020 is attached to a blank which easily pops out, but the connector is a 4 pin connector. The sensor that I received has 6 pins.

After popping out the blank, already visually different from photos posted in this thread.

Oh well not much wasted on a $5 part. Everything snapped back in quicker than it came out.

Anyone discover a knock-off sensor that works yet? The OEM price is crazy.
 
For reference, my 2014 TEP does not have the harness attached to the dummy plug. The 2014 had some other electronic differences(e.g. clock display showing compass and range/mpg) so that may be why.
 
Thanks for this. Did this on my 2018 ORP the other day. Pulled the existing piece using the suggested credit card method, then slipped a loop of electrical tape in between the wires to ensure they didn’t fall back inside and popped on the new sensor, everything just worked.

Can you post (or send me) a link or info about which sensor you bought? I bought one of the Tennessee ones, but it doesn't work on my 2018 SR5.
 
would love to do this for my 2020 ORP. Is there a known factory part# that works and will fit the 4pin set up that snowpeak posted?

It occasionally pops up on Ebay but it's usually someone selling scrap parts, one offs. Here's a recent listing for $74

Just did this today to my '17 ORP. Quick and simple. It's raining here today, so driving with my headlights on and the dash lit up was a treat.

All you guys ordering these have driven the price up. I paid nearly $9 for one from KY. Going to have to change the thread title.

I might be in the same boat.

I tried your suggestion using TechStream v12 before tearing my lower dash apart to inspect further. Looks like my sensor isn't fully wired to MPX Body ECU despite the dummy sensor in-dash having a harness. Just posting to save somebody else the frustration. Thanks!

I used the exact part snowpeak referenced on my Venture yesterday. It was simply pop up the dummy, disconnect the plug, plug in the new sensor, and push back in the hole. Covering sensor with my hand would dim gauges and screen. Doesn’t seem to have any effect on the clock but that doesn’t bother me.
 
I pulled my panel apart today and was really frustrated at what I found (see pics). It appears that the secondary harness from the light sensor does not terminate at the MPX Body ECU. I looked everywhere for the sensor wires (red, blue, pink) and could not find them anywhere. Did not remove the instrument cluster to look behind there.

Also, just so others know, the MPX Body ECU on a 2015 SR5 Prem is located to the left of the steering wheel right behind the windshield defrost and inverter buttons on the "knee panel". At least I now know why the sensor doesn't work... I appreciate your help and suggestions!

Just wanted to post my results. NOT all SR5 PREMIUMS are fully wired to work out of box with a light sensor. Mine is a 2015 SR5 Premium, and this is no "5 minute mod" for me I'm afraid.

According to the wiring diagram, the connector to the ambient light sensor is part of the "Instrument Panel No. 2 Wire". This harness connects to the main harness "Instrument Panel Wire" via connection FG1 (located against the firewall, behind the instrument cluster). "Instrument Panel Wire" connects to the Main Body ECU using connection F9.

Blong, according to your pictures, F9 is the second harness down (in the second picture), which has a black white and green wire at the top. The black wire is cavity 6, the green wire is cavity 18, and the empty cavity to the right is 30. If the harnesses were connected all the way through, you should see the light sensor connect on cavities 20 (pink), 21 (red) and 22 (blue). Counting from the top right of that connector is cavity 30, below that is 29, below that is 28. Unfortunately its not clear in your picture if cavities 20, 21 and 22 are populated.

My guess is that you are missing the connectors between FG1 and F9, even though you have the harness between FG1 and the light sensor.

(What else would be interesting is if anyone who is missing the harness at the light sensor does have the harness between FG1 and F9).

In either case, it may be possible to just create a harness to connect directly from the light sensor to the main body ECU, no need to go through FG1 unless someone wanted to source out those terminal part numbers, and rip their entire dash apart. To make this bypass harness, one should be able hack the 4th gen harness light harness (82142-35020) and extend the wires directly down to the main body ECU, connecting them into the F9 connection using the proper terminals. Unfortunately, I don’t have the part numbers of these terminals. Does anyone know what these terminals part numbers are?

On a similar note, it appears cavity 28 is not connected on the F9 harness, according to the wiring diagram, this is the connection required for automatic headlights to be controlled via the ambient light sensor (which according to another thread was thought to be Body ECU programming). If this connection is added in addition to the ambient light sensor, factory “Auto Headlights” might be possible.
 
Finally did this mod yesterday after having the $7 eBay/Chinese made sensor on my workbench for the past 4 months. My 2019 TRD ORP did indeed have the wires plugged into the blank. It worked perfectly and could easily be the best upgrade yet! Thanks guys.

This might depend on which headlight switch the vehicle comes with. There are 4 types, and only 2 have an "auto" function.
