My best guess is that with the low miles, that it probably had some period of inactivity which may have caused various things to get gunked up.

Got my tune up done a couple weeks ago and did the following:
- Replaced fuel filter
- Replaced air filter
- Replaced spark plugs
- Replaced PCV valve
- Replaced ignition wires
- Fuel induction injection
Was not cheap. Hard to see much of a difference on the mileage yet which is a bit disappointing.
Also replaced the battery yesterday. Only got a Maxx EverStart from WalMart. I'll get a nicer one when I graduate and have the money!

If you have an automatic, make sure you read up on "pink-milkshake" and either get your radiator replaced or get an external tranny cooler. Granted, your 4runner probably has less than 100,000 miles, but if you read up on pink milkshake, it's usually due to age more so than mileage.
Nice 4runner BTW. Sometimes I wish I would have looked around more to get one with paint matched bumpers like yours...

I just got back in the states from a semester abroad, so I haven't been able to much in a while.
Since getting back I replaced a sway bar link and cleaned my MAF sensor like suggested. I have noticed a minuscule amount of MPG increase.
I just bought all the supplies to clean and spray paint my wheels black which I hope to accomplish today or tomorrow.
My parents have offered to help me out with a lift kit for my birthday, so I am putting in the time to research it. My target to spend is only about $300, but definitely less than $500. Any general suggestions?

Paint your fender flares since they look pretty badly weathered. Worry about getting the exterior up to par also since looks go along ways.
After cleaning the plastic and then using an adhesion promoter I sprayed a couple coats of this.
If I did it again I might go with something with a little more semi gloss look but the flat black hides and deals with scratches on the trails better. They a little dusty in this pic but they look better than they did.

I personally have been debating back and forth and have finally gone with the TRD tundra progressive coils, with Bilstein 5100's in the front. and Old Man Emu 890 coils in the rear. all and all its 2.5" to 3" of lift, and under $500.
I started to paint my wheels today based of the write up listed on the forum.
Here are the products I used:
I ended up actually not using the Clean White Primer.
I cleaned the wheels using 409 degreaser, a steel wool pad, 400 grit sandpaper, a rag, and a scotch brite pad.
I applied two coats of the Self Etched Primer, then used a steel wool pad and cleaned it off. I applied another coat of SEP.
Three coats of black base coat were next.
I'm about to go start putting on the clear coat, but it looks pretty good so far.

Replaced my 02 Sensor after the maintenance light came on for it. I have noticed a little bit of mileage improvement, but just driving around town at school (<5 minute trips, under 30 mph) is still giving me around 11 mpg. I guess there isn't much you can do about that.
Also, really screwed up last weekend by driving 60 miles with my parking brake on. I usually never use it, but I parked on a big hill and just completely forgot about it. Had something covering the brake light on the dash too. When I finally noticed it and turned it off, I didn't notice any difference. The runner wasn't acting strange at all for the 60 miles it was on either, so I wonder if my brake is just shot.
Laugh it up.

Driving from Virginia to Vancouver while living out of my 4Runner. Planning to take it slow on the way back and travel, so may be a few months!

I looked at your page and saw the sleeping platform. 35 years ago an architect friend designed a similar platform for the top of a VW bus so we could sit on top and watch races at Road Atlanta. We had as many as 12 people on top, we had people from all over the country that came every year to sit up high. I now have a 1999 4Runner LTD and want to sleep in at road races and rallys around the country.

Been a while guys, but in an unfortunate turn of events my 4Runner was hit by a package delivery driver yesterday and is more than likely totaled. I'm hoping to get a fair price for it from the delivery company's insurance, but am worried since KBB values are fairly low for 4Runner's. In the past 1.5 years, I've replaced the tires, timing belt/water pump, and just replaced the brake rotors and pads. Along with the recent maintenance and being a Highlander edition, I'm hoping to justify a reasonable payout. If any of you have tips with this experience, I'd love to hear em. Many thanks as always.

Turn down the first offer they give you, saying it was worth more than that and kept it in very good condition.
