My axle is leaking again!!!Need some answers

Who wants to bet me $20 publicly that it will again leak even after Toyota charges you your left nut to replace it?

Some people just like to spend money without thought. If you have $$ to burn, have at it.

Oh and on the bearing issue. if the bearing was worn out, it would moan like mother. you are carrying a few thousand pounds on a worn bearing. they tend to be noisy. The moan comes on at around 40mph and gets louder from there. turning corners also make the moan worse on the load bearing side.

Well I've read your thread but I don't think the dealership will press the rear axle bearing retainer on backwards for me. And with no machine shops around here close I'm screwed with either taking to an indy that will most likely screw it all up or take it to Toyota where ill at least have a guarantee

So here's the script on how this will end.

"I brought my truck to this dealership because you said you could fix my leaking axle for $650"

"Sir we will have our "master" tech Fred look at your truck under our warrantee since its leaking again"

"Fine but what if leaks again?"

"If it can be fixed, Fred is the man. He has been to our "masterbater" pro classes. I assure you sir that it will be fixed"

Two days later...

"I thought you said Fred could fix it? I paid twice what an outside shop would charge and its still leaking"

"Let's call Fred over to talk with you. He can explain it better"

Fred: "sir your rear axle is bent and no matter how many seals we install, it will leak. So you see, we cant guarrantee our service because its a bigger problem that we just discovered. But if you replace the axle, then we will guarrantee it."

OMG! Why didnt you check that before it leaked two more time? Fine replace the axle."
Two days later:
You "Its still leaking! After $1,000 I want to know why. "

Fred. " the axle housing is bent and cannot be sealed. I am sorry sir but you will need a whole new axle housing. You could always trade it in"

You. " that SOB on tr4.org was right. I can't post back there ever again, Im too embarrassed.

BTW if you read the thread, a member did get their dealer to make the change. If you dont ask, you wont get. Make sure they do the grease test to make sure it is centered on the retainer.

main thing is to have the spacer centered on the seal, really doesn't matter which way it is installed onto the shaft. On my 2002 the spacer is 11.5mm and the new one I got is only 9.5mm in length, less space and more prone to not seal due to not centered on seal. I had the axle shop install it backwards so there is more leave way. The seal is more fore giving and won't get damaged if the beveled part of the spacer is installed in reverse order. Measuring from the end, start of shiny part of axle, to the seal spacer I used 4mm of space. It's just when installed, the spacer, the proper way you might have to install it more in towards the axle housing. What ever you do be there with the tech and perform the grease test to see where the seal sits on the spacer like Drcoffe said. Good luck.

OK well I am glad this ordeal is over with, I just got it back from the dealer today after $900 in repairs that consisted of new shoes for both sides , new ABS sensor for drivers side, and new seals correctly installed. The indy that I took it to screwed it all up! :nono: He apparently removed the previous seals with a screwdriver and scratched the axle housing pretty good. Also apparently didn't remove the ABS sensor and broke part of the ABS sensor (he was able to save 1 of them ) And to make it even worse instead of using a seal pusher like he said he had he used a fricking flat head screwdriver to pound it into the axle housing dinging the new seals all up and basically ruining the seals. The Toyota dealership took pictures of the damage and the tech had never seen anybody screw up new seals as bad as my indy did. They did the job correctly this time and gave me a 1 year guarantee on seals. I guess this explains why the seals kept leaking in the first place. So at least its done for now and the tech who drives a 1998 T4R and has been a master tech for 30 years said everything else was in great condition. So the leaking axle seal drama is over for now. I am going to pay my Indy a visit next week with the pictures the Service guy is supposed to email me and see if I can get my money back for the original repair. Thanks to all that have helped.
