My entertaining CL 4Runner search

So I've been looking for a week now for a Runner for my mom. I forgot how many CL ads I went through to find our two. Some sound like a great deal, some not so much, gotta love the ones with the night pics, and theres one where the seller says countless time No leaks No lights on No problems, Really. Oh and can't forget the one the seller had to be asian and yes I read speaking that way lol. Theres even one that still owes on her loan and after you buy the truck, she will pay her loan and within 5-7 business days you take possession of the Runner HA. One was a 97 or 98 and the person has had for less time than I have had mine, the numbers on the plate were like 20 up from mine, theres reasons people only keeps vehicles for a year and get rid of them.

I guess I'm kinda of leary and really look into the ad. From a few pictures you can get a little idea of the seller.

Then I find ones like this. If you bought it a year ago and put 10k into it that year why are you selling it for $8500? Nice wheels, sliders, ARB bumper, lights, winch, rack/jack. I wouldn't mind having it myself and probably wouldn't even try to talk you down a little as long as it ran good and there were no problems. Just makes me wonder and move on to the next.

That one almost looks worth checking out and take it to a mechanic to see if its ok.
If its mechanicly sound, you could sell it, keep it for yourself and give yours up to mom.

"You can't break a Toyota truck." = Means that he tried!

Yeah, I'd pass on that, too.

IMO $8500 is ridiculous for a 98 with 188k on it. I sold my '99 with 150k on it for $5k and nobody ever offered me more than that. Had the E-locker, the tall coils and was in good shape except for a dent in the door. Even had an aftermarket bumper (which I think was the thing that put people off - it was a tube bumper and a lot of people find them ugly.)

I could never give mine to my mom, the only way I will get rid of mine is if the engine blows up or its totaled…..I do my best to prevent either of those from happening.

I was thinking he made it pretty on the outside to distract from the problem on the inside. It must be the mountains here that make the sellers want more, being greedy too.

I hear ya. I'll be the one that decides when mine is done and had its days.

Pretty much...I ran into much the same when I was looking for a T4R for my wife. Had a guy that accused me of breaking his tranny on a test drive...people wanting a mint for theirs. Wound up paying less than 8K for a 2002 Limited with 125k on the clock.

This guy cracks me up...try cleaning up your vehicle before you try to sell it for more than it's worth.

No Joke…theres something really wrong with the alignment, that front tire is lacking some serious siping, or they got a funky set of Michelins.

Today we went so momma could test drive a 3rd and 4th gen and see the differences. She decided on a 4th gen, this makes it so much easier to look for one now.

The 3rd gen was such a POS, the only reason it was still running is because it had a bomb ass engine. It was super rusty and something was leaking from the bolt on the backside of the pumpkin. I won't go into anymore detail, the poor thing :cry2: the pics looked really nice. It was a 99 limited w/195,000 they wanted 5k

Fwi, I bought my 2003 4th gen v8 with 163k on it for $5800. Found out later I stole it at that price. Toyota.com is a great resource to find out if the car has been to the dealership for anything. That's how I found out service history on my truck before I bought it and found out the guy was lying to be about a blinking a.c. light.

Maybe I should have listened to you and went and looked at it :dammit:

Heres the story,
Went to the dealership to ask about the driveshaft and when we were coming outside theres a guy checking out my Runner (made me feel good) he wanted to know about the tailpipe mod and where I had it done. He is the head sales guy and we ended up talking for a while about 4Runners. He started talking about one he bought for $2,100 last year that needed a new axle and timing belt but otherwise was perfect, then said he had just sold it with 10k worth of stuff he had put on it….well he didn't pay 10k he knows people and got good deals. So it was like buying a repoed house and flipping it.

Hated when that happens.
