My Homelink Stinks!

After reading countless messages about how great homelink is, I just have to ask the question: how does homelink compare to the ugly ratty old remote that comes with the garage door opener?

As far as range is concerned, my homelink stinks! And I have to hold it down longer than I prefer!

I'm not feeling the homelink vibe...or is there something wrong with mine?

We've got Homelink in the Highlander and I have to agree. You have to hold the button way to long and sometimes the programming just deletes itself.

I mounted my opener in the 4Runner with double stick tape on the door that you can put glasses in. It works really well there.
 
No complaints here. We've got it in our Honda too and both work fine. No problems with the range. I do agree that you have to hold the button a little longer the original remote but it's not much longer.
 
Yea, you do have to hold the button a bit longer than a normal remote, but I have found that the range is at least 3-4 times greater compared to the standard remote. I have a Craftsman opener by the way.

Wow better range? Not that it should matter but which button did you program? I programmed the closest to the driver one, the other two didn't seem to take the codes! I also have a craftsman opener, the one with rolling codes.

I programmed the one closest to the driver. I also have a Craftsman with the rolling codes. I tried to program the middle button to my parents opener, but could never get it. They have a newer Craftsman as well.
 
I too get better range. I programmed the middle button but had to do it about 3 times to get it programmed.
The only problem I have with the homelink is that I always have to feel for it (at night). Wish it was a glowing button or somewhere more conspicuous than between the sunglass holder and the sunroof switch.
The homelink on my infiniti G35 was on the rearview mirror.
 
Two big advantages for me.

1) Range. I can start the opener from down the block rather than in the driveway.

2) Looks - much cleaner look than a clip to the visor.



For those that are not seeing the range improvement, did you change the battery in the remote before programming. It makes a big difference.
 
Well my Homelink sucks compared to my handheld opener.

It has shorter range and is much slower to send the signal (so I have to hold the button down longer).

I wish there was some way to boost or at least verify the range (or more specifically, the power output) on these units.

I think the variability we are seeing here indicates some sort of problem.

Just installed the Homelink on my 04 SE and I LOVE's it. In the words of that Paris Hilton chic, Its Hot.....
 
Purchased a Homelink unit from Partznet also and no issues for me, it's really convenient to just have to press the button on the roof and not look for the opener.
 
I have all three buttons programmed on the factory installed Homelink in my 03 4Runner. They all work and have never lost their programming, as some others have reported.

However, they seem to be more directional than the Craftsman remotes that came with my garage door openers. The Craftsman remotes would work from just about anywhere within a 200 foot radius of my house as long as there weren't any significant obstacles in the way. The Homelink will work from the same distance, but I have to be pointed directly at the receiver in order for it to work at that distance.
 
My range is better too with my Homelink. I have the original Stanley opener in my Ram, and from just the other side of the street, it wont open or close the door. But the Homelink in the 4Runner will start the door opening from a couple houses down.

Only complaint is you do have to hold the button longer, and it's hard to find in the dark. (Which is odd because wife says I do my best work in the dark LOL)

Looks are a big factor. Built in, matches the vehicle, no clip dents in the visor anymore, no fiddling to get the opener out of the center console or storage in the dash, etc. No batteries to change.

Way more positives that offset the few negatives it has IMHO.
 
Question for you guys - I have a 2007 SR5 without homelink, but would like to add it.

I'm being told the one on partznet (by a partznet rep) won't work in mine. Other dealers say you're only buying the console itself, but the electronics is seperate (which I thought going in was wrong), and on top of that they can't tell me where to get the electronics.

So what's the real story?

For what it's worth, I don't have a moonroof.
 
I did a quick drill down on the partznet website and it appears that you can get it for an '07.

I just purchased one for my '05 and its the entire overhead console including electronics. Works great, clears up the clutter on the visor. You do have to push the button a little longer than your typical opener, but the range is better in my opinion.

I would DEFINITELY not recomment partznet. They are assholes. Tried asking a simple question about pricing and if members here got a discount and stated what a member reported paying for a part that I was also intersted in, and got a snotty response saying that the price was below his cost and it was bad business and he cant sell parts at a loss yadda yadda yadda. Many other folks have complained about partznet problems here.

I'd go straight to the dealerships for it or look on eBay or some wrecking yard sites.

I got mine when having my sunroof installed. They ordered it on accident, was just going to replace a goofed up console and ordered the one with HomeLink in it on accident. So it all worked out. But you can DEFINITELY get the console ready to pop in with the homelink board and connections all assembled from the factory. Do a bit more searching, there are even part numbers here in one of the posts for different interior colors.....;):
 
funny, i thought i was the only one that had a horrible transmitting range.. But what i noticed, the homelink sucks only on ONE gate of my subdivision, the other gate it works fine and works well with my garage door openner so I really think it's fine and very helpful for me, so I dont have to carry around 2 remote controls. :cool:
