My idle is like waves on the ocean?

Upppp downnnn Upppppp downnnn.

When I drive it holds idle fine. -However when i start driving up a hill and I need to push the pedal down more to compensate for the hill, i get kind of a "bearing" sound from the engine :O

Any ideas guys?

THe distributor bearing broke while offroading in Tahoe, fixed that, and retimed it....but now what?

Any bubbles/air in your coolant?

Your temp gauge looks high to me. My 2nd gen never gets that high.

I agree, temp is definitely higher than normal. Might wanna check the t-stat and see if you hear "gurgling" when you turn your interior heater on high heat. If you hear gurgling, you have air trapped in the system. Easiest way to purge is put the front end up in the air really high, let it idle with cap off for several minutes. The air will seek the highest point in the system, which should be the radiator cap.

As for the surging, I'd say its timing or tps sensor is off. I got the exact same thing on my 22RE years ago when my tps was just a hair off (that thing is SUPER-sensitive when you adjust it!).

I've also found that using allen screws instead of those stupid philips screws that hold the tps onto the throttle body is so much easier to adjust!

Tps sounds like it could use some adjusting. I agree that flat head design allows for it to move easily. ill try both today. Thanks guys!

Yeah, that temp gauge is not very sensitive, so when it gets close to the red, you're already approaching a dangerous temp! I can't recall what it was as its been probably 10 years since I tested this, but on the '87 gauge, at just under the red mark, I think the temp of the water was around 205º! at just under the middle mark, it was at 185º.

I run a 185º thermostat in my truck, which has the 22RE, as well as a 3-core radiator, and the temp gauge is usually around 1/3rd to just below the halfway mark. Its nice on trails when you're sitting at idle most of the day!
