Homemade $12 cat clamp (not counting cost of cheapy home welder)

This is by no means meant to be theftproof. Just a visual deterrent and physically it will take them longer to get it.

I bought 4ft of chain from Home Depot for $6 and 2 exhaust clamps from Autozone for $6

I bought 1 2-1/4" clamp which worked for the back end of the cat. I needed a 2-1/2" clamp for the front end to get as close to the cat as possible so they would have to cut through the actual cat and not thin pipe.

Then I welded (with my previously mentioned 110v mig) the chain to the brackets

Bolted in place.

Of course they could just unbolt it but I don't think they will take that much time. The nuts on the clamps are at the top so not much room to work with and I used two different sized nuts since one of the nuts that came with the clamp I bought was boogered.

They will need a handful of tools to get mine off.

That ain't gonna do much. The thieves around DFW hit a car lot one night and got about 25 Cats from new 4runners and Sequoias. They used a sawzall to cut them out. You can cut a chain with a sawzall in about 20 seconds.

Well I would think that when you go to cut it the saws all would have trouble since it isn't a solid object (it would move around went trying to be cut) don't you think? My cat got stolen about 2 months ago and I did a similar set up with steel cables.

I would like to see someone try to cut a free floating chain with a sawzall. I dont think it would end pretty. Looks like a good idea man, definitely a deterrent.

I think its enough to make them move to the next car. I bet most cat thieves run on the Six Sigma approach. If it is too difficult move on.

Thanks for the props, and Singtoe, I drove it around thinking the same thing. I didn't hear a sound. I bet if I took it on some nice washboard road I'd hear it though. Wouldn't bother me in those circumstances.

I think the chain is just tight enough to keep it from moving around much. I got lucky, 4ft was just right. Actually 3ft may have worked also. I wrapped it around the crossmember 3 times.

Nice try but that really doesn't do much, i could cut that right now as fast i could without it there. 2nd if i were someone stealing cats, if i knew i had some extra time, you wouldn't have a crossmember anymore.

Kball, I applaud your effort. Two things I'm curious about: Does it make any noise when you drive? How hard are the clamps, would a sawzall not cut through them?

seeing people now know my dads serious about things haha this is what we came up with.
diamond plate bolted and tacked/ welded to the frame and curved up with the pipe (not just flat if you can tell)
it is impossible to cut the front side of the cat pipe without having this off first, thats the idea
