Went surfing yesterday morning and since my college age son is down, I let him use the tacoma and told him not to take the new 2001 I bought because I have not put in the new rear diff yet. Drove out of the valley in my 97 and she misfired going up the hill. This is the first time in the 6 years I have owned it that it had misfired. No check engine light. Went surfing ( got to stick to whats important) and she misfired all the way back home. Steady misfire at all speeds. No check engine light, no codes on the ultrguage and no pending codes. Mystified by this because she is basically running on 5 cylinders. Pulled the plug wires up on the drivers side while running and there is the problem on #6 near the firewall. When I pull the plug wire up on #6 it does not change unlike #2 and #4 where there is a big difference. I put brand new ngk plugs and plug wires on when I bought thanks to this forum which I was lurking on at the time. Only have 15k miles on the plugs and wires. Pulled the #6 spark plug an layed it on the upper intake with the wire and she sparks like crazy. Research a bit and come to the conclusion that it must be the injector. Ask my friend if I can pull the injectors off his 99 parts car and he says no problem. Back in an hour with 3 injectors a coil and a skid plate. Tear my intake down and check the resistance on#6 14.5 Out of spec as were #2 and#4 in the mid 14s. Well 99 injectors are not quite the same as the 97 and everyone warns to put in new 0-rings but f-it I am desperate here. In they go with a bit of silicone grease and I take the time to tighten the valve cover bolts with a little blue loctite. No luck Same misfire as before but I do get a code and no gas leaks! 306 misfire in cylinder 6 Swap the new coil in on #3 and no difference. Its now dark and I will have to deal with it tomorrow
