My new 02, pretty peppy

Just got it the other day and compared to other ones I test drove, it's not sluggish at all, which was what I read about 4runners. In fact it sounds LOUD and has some serious oomph in terms of acceleration. It's stock though so the previous owner didn't do any clear air intake mods.

Just curious if this is normal, is it awesome, or something I should look into?

I guess you never been in another suv. Lol.

175hp and a tank does not have pep period. If supercharged you may have some pep but still not much.

My daughter's '02 is much peppier than my '99 or my son's '96. Hers is 2wd. Other two are 4wd.

I was surprised with how peepy my 1997 felt when i first got it,it was a stock 5 speed... now on 35s with stock gears and im really debating whether it really needs to be regeared.

My last car was a CR-v first gen. I loved it but it got totaled by an idiot. Being light, it had DECENT pep, not much. My wife's subie definitely had more.

I test drove 5 4runners and 4 were SLOOOOOW. This one (although lowest mileage too) accelerates pretty darn fast in comparison. I was just curious.

Also, this one seems to have more vroom with acceleration, which is why I suspected some kind of mod done to it.

Also, not related to it's "pep" I notice a pretty good clunk (not nasty noise, just the feeling throughout the car) when I shift into R or D. Because of this I usually shift and wait for the clunk then drive off. Is that something wrong with tranny or just the power of the motor?

If that feels peppy try a V8 4th gen, that'll be a race car. I forgot what it's like to drive a stock 3rd gen, but mine on two sizes bigger tires and some added weight is anything but peppy...

I can justify everyone of my purchases to myself, others not so much haha

You may need to grease your driveshaft. I would anyway, chances are it hasn't been done in a long time.

They do shift hard when cold, that't normal. My 4Runner with a fairly new transmission will jar slightly to the right when I shift to R or D when it's cold. It's the sloppy shifts you have to watch out for! If a 4Runner sort of wanders... and slowly decides to shift... into gear... that's when you get worried!

And you need to test drive more vehicles my friend. Drive mine for a day! But I'm glad you love your 4Runner! It'll be good to you for sure, they are built to last.
