My new 4R replacement

Just a followup from this thread I made a while ago

I finalized the transaction and took possession of a v6 4Runner with 45xxx miles for close to 21k after taxes earlier this afternoon. This 4R will replace my previous v8 4Runner I've had for a little over a month before it got totaled. I was really torn between a v6 and a v8 when searching for a 4Runner but the deal with the low mileage on it was too sweet of an offer to pass up on. My previous 4Runner had 78k miles on it and I lost about $1k with my shitty insurance's settlement offer. It took me some time to locate a replacement but after 3 hours of driving to the dealership and 2 hours of negotiating, we finally came to an agreement on the price.


Basic info about this 4R - one owner vehicle that was previously owned by an Engineer who owned multiple cars so it is fair to say he barely used this vehicle for general use. He actually traded in the 4R for a 2016 4Runner so I'd imagine he got a nice offer to afford a 2016!! Very minimal rust. The condition of this 4R is borderline to brand new in terms of mechanical condition as well as cosmetic. I really lucked out landing this 4R and I'm still baffled no one else snatched it up before I did. Admittedly so, I am starting to feel a little better about walking out on a different dealership that had a v8 '07 Sport Edition with 75k miles and would not sell it for less than $19k last week.

Now I just need to replace the stereo system, add tint, install rear camera, and look into buying a pair of dash/rear cameras for insurance purposes :vader:

Wow reading these comments and other comments on other post I feel like I paid way over for mine.
I purchased a 2006 T4R Sport Edition V8 4WD with 96k miles color is shadow mica. It has sunroof, both front seats are power, it has the tubular steps. I think that's all the options I can think of... Ok I'll get to the price lol
I paid for mine out the door 22k. I bought from Carmax with warranty for 3years which was about $1800. List price was 19k and some change. Not to mention that it is in mint condition inside out and under the hood. I got the most expensive insurance plan which gives me a $0 deductible for repairs. And not to mention it only increase my payment by $22 a month.
I was in the market for a 4R for long time. Wasn't sure if I wanted a 3rd gen or newer. Kept switching back and forth. I was very undecided in what I wanted. This one popped up after searching for so long and decided what the heck let's go for it. Its under 100k miles, looks nice, drives really good. My uncle that is has been a mechanic for the last 20years checked it out and told me "it's good to go, it drives like new, no rattles etc." so yes call me crazy for buying it with a way over price, but I've it for 3months and I love it.
Any insight on why I shouldn't have bought it or a pat on back for buying it?

Nice choice. I say you scored a hell of a deal! 45k miles for $21k sounds pretty cheap compared to what I paid for mine. 2006 4WD T4R sport edition 96k miles for 22k out the door with a 3year zero deductible warranty.

4 years ago I paid $24k for an 07 sr5 v6 4wd with 56k on it. Last year I paid $18k for an 05 gx470 (limited v8 t4r) with 86k miles but it was a little rough and pretty dirty and took some time to get right. The leather still looks bad IMO but my wife says it's fine.

I too paid in the low $20's. I looked a long time and I already knew I wanted a low mileage V8. I got my 2008 with 65,000 miles last fall. It was below book at the time and I knew I was paying top end for it, but they are getting harder and harder to find with good miles. No regrets, haven't seen another one since that was similar for less money.

If you want to save money, buying one with low miles for 20k or more won't get you anywhere IMO. If its a V8 chances are the timing belt and water pump hasn't been changed and that's almost 1k extra wheras if you buy one with 100k or 120k miles its already been done and its a cheaper truck to begin with.

You can find great condition ones with 115-130k miles for $14,000. $6k less than ones with 50k less miles. Unless you expect $6k worth of added enjoyment in that 50k miles, I'd just pocket the money instead. Sure the truck might last 4 extra years without needing its "x" part replaced, If you plan on keeping it a while, It'll need to be replaced eventually and you'll have the 6k extra to do so if you bought the cheaper truck.

Edit: I realized saving money may not be the reason people spend the extra for a clean, like-new truck. I guess I'm not sure what the reason is?

I feel like you did not do your due research, maybe? Sorry but you just legitimately linked me to a 4R that is actually SR5, the base model of 4Runners with 87k miles. The 4Runner I bought is actually a Sport Edition, not SR5. What is funny is that a lot of dealers have been putting the word "Sport" in their title thinking it would lure in prospective buyers only to realize some of them already know what a Sport actually looks like.

Of course base models will always be the cheapest, it's not exactly rocket science. It's also dependent on the local markets where the 4R is being sold. There are people who are willing to fly cross-country to pick up 4R's with insane deals attached to it and drive it back home. I am not one of those people; I do not have the time nor luxury to do something like this. I really wish I could do something like this but with my current schedule, it is simply not possible. The fact I actually drove 3 hours out of state was difficult enough for me but it was worth the drive. Now I'd be really salty if I drove 5+ hours and did not end up finalizing the transaction

I also failed to mention there is a 3 year warranty that was included as part of this transaction at no additional cost. So maybe in your eyes, I overpaid but I sure as hell feel comfortable about this deal. My previous '95, '99, '04 4Runners lasted forever with no major issues and I'm more than confident this 4R will treat me well for many years to come.

I actually still have the '04 but I plan to retire it as a 2nd vehicle now that I have this 4R. You deserve a pat on the back, for sure! I will have to admit I am slightly jealous you have a Shadow Mica, that is one of the colors I was hoping to come across when shopping for 4Runners!!

As for your wife though...there is always an option to replace the upholstery in your vehicle, just saying!! :kiss: I actually avoided Limited editions because of leather seats even though I could have had 'em replaced for close to $700 at this local shop in my area. Plus they did not have the cool looking running boards like the Sport so thats another reason why I avoided Limited :spit:

That's exactly why I was looking for a 4r over 100k. Found a 2006 V8 limited for 14k with 126k miles, all services done and maintained really well. Sunroof, lifted with bilstein 5100s, led light bar. Mechanically it's as solid as can be and cosmetically it's also excellent. In a hot 4runner market like Colorado is right now I jumped on it. Plan on driving it into the dirt, hopefully well over 300k miles at that point.

Market conditions vary from state to state. California is a hot market for 4runners, especially 4wd ones. Took me about 3 months to even find a good condition 4wd with under 100k miles and when I did I jumped on it.

You're in CA, that's why, haha. I paid 21k out the door for my 2007 SR5 V6 with 88k miles on it. I also bought from Carmax because I finally found what I was mostly looking for and they don't haggle. Had I gone to an actual dealership, I might have shaved another 1-3k off, but even private party prices are up there in California. At that point, I needed something with a real backseat (vs the backseat of my Access Cab 2nd gen Tacoma) for my son to be comfortably transported around in full time, and I was tired of looking.
