My new runner

I am having an old Original radiator rebuilt. The shop only does radiators and is well established/respected. They said rebuilding a brass core radiator is far superior to any aftermarket radiator made with aluminum and plastic. Mine was shot, so I got 2 old ones from a local "Toyota Junkie" and the shop is going to make it work for me. You can get a New brass/metal radiator, for about $100 more than the aluminum ones.
 
Ok guys. Couple questions.

First, are these brackets supposed to be flat against the frame like pictured, or are they supposed to be at about 45 degrees? They were at 45 degrees when I got the car, but it had been in a crash.

Second, is this little pocket supposed to look almost rusty inside? And is there a gasket that goes there? If there was a gasket it looks blown out or disintegrated.

The bolt towers above the crossmember are supposed to be vertical. The thing you've got bolted to the near tower looks like part of a Smittybuilt bumper?

One of the 3.0 guys will need to handle part two. I have no idea what that thing is.
 
Ok sweet. There was a smittybilt bumper on there. I didn't realize that the two brackets left behind were still part of it. Thanks!
 
Brown sludge in the coolant system does not bring all the boys to the yard, especially in a motor already prone to overheating. Could be rust or maybe somebody mixed incompatible coolants in the past. Either way I see a coolant system flush in your future, and keep an eye on it.
 
Well, I realized I would have to drain my new radiator to do the timing belt later, so I just began dismantling to do the timing belt. Good thing, the sticker on the hood said 68,000 miles and January of 2000. I'm sitting at 130k now. So time to buy more parts.

Found a bunch of tutorials and tips, excited to learn......
 
Should have everything running this weekend. Then the real fun begins, designing the new bumpers and interior. I'm going to be making new panel sections out of sheet metal, and maybe some mdf.
 
No on the MDF! it adsorbs moisture, warps, crumbles, molds, and all sorts of good stuff. If this is to be a trail rig and you do use MDF put it where it wont get wet.

Good advice, didn't think about that.

But..... This is a ***** to replace. Options anyone?

Edit never mind. Found the middle section of the backing plate is separate. Derrrrr.....
