My weird problem - help!

I'm having some issues with my 4runner. She is a 1990 4wd V6. 150k and I just bought her about a month ago.

This stuff all happend yesterday, I'm not sure if any of it is related at all or not. As the morning started off she was running beautifully. But during the course of the day and about 70 miles of driving the following things happened.

1) It smells like she is running very rich

2) Upon starting my vehicle after she sat for a few hours I immediately noticed something wasn't right. It sounded like the engine was misfiring. I got out of the vehicle and my exhaust sounded like something was "popping" inside. I was almost sure it was a misfire, so I got under the hood and started checking the spark plug wires thinking maybe one of them came loose. They were all in place. I reved the engine from the throttle under the hood and the engine sounded like it was reving normal. I let her warm up a bit and then started driving (kinda had to be somewhere).

I got on the freeway and something definitely felt wrong. My exhaust sounded like a tractor (no there is no hole or anything) and my vehicle started feeling like I was lightly tapping the brakes every few seconds. My RPM's and speed stayed the same, but the vehicle felt like it wanted to die. The closest thing I can describe the feeling is if you just lightly tapped the brake pedal while keeping your foot on the gas. After about 10 miles, it completely went away and she drove normal. I pulled into a gas station and check all the basics over, but everything looked normal.

I continued about my day and she was running good until we come to #3

3) I was cleaning out my car with the CD player on and engine off. After about 20 minutes I went to start her back up and she wouldn't start. My cd player still had power, my lights worked, ignition was on, etc.

Starter wasn't getting any power, but the thing is brand new. Just put it in a few weeks ago. I called up a friend of mine to come help and after some McGuyver style diagnostics we come to this conclusion that the starter solenoid isn't getting any power. We found the starter solenoid line under the hood and ran power from the battery straight to the starter solenoid line and she started right up. So basically the communication between my ignition and my starter isn't working.

I did just get an alarm installed a few weeks ago and it has a starter kill switch or whatever it is. From my understanding they must have tapped into that starter solenoid line behind the dash somewhere. I completely disabled my alarm system (valet/suspend mode) , but it still wont start from the ignition.

I am going to take it back to the shop that installed the alarm ASAP and see if it has something to do with the alarm. If it isnt the alarm, what would it be? What will cause the break in power from my ignition to my starter?

Any ideas as to if the weird running and running rich smell could have something to do with it?

Thank you!

Thank you guys. I took it to the alarm shop today and they said it is not the alarm that is causing it. Does anybody have a factory service manual who could scan a diagram of the starter solenoid line? I know there is a starter relay under the hood, is there a fuse somewhere?

She starts good everytime using the Macguyver method of touching a wire between the battery and starter soleniod line under the hood. She seems to be running good now, I just can't start the car from inside. There must be a blown fuse or pinched wire somewhere inbetween the ignition and solenid line under the hood.

Have you tried jiggling the shifter violently when it wont start ( hold key in start position and wiggle shifter violently). They have a neutral safety switch that gets worn out.

Might your other problem be a nasty fuel filter of fuel pump screen? Or a plugged up cat converter? WOuldnt that be simple?

This is from a 1984-95 4Runner service manual. Hope it helps...

Thank you guys very much. I understand this might also be the ignition switch. Has anyone ever replaced their igniton switch? How difficult? does anyone have a how-to on replacing the ignition switch? Thank you

Thank you cometobanks. The link you posted wont work for me.

You are referring to the gear shifter right? I turned the ignition on and shook the shifter knob around while it was in park, but it didnt do anything. That worked for you? How did you eventually fix the problem?

I prescribe to the shaking the gear shift method. 2 years now. It seems to get worse as my battery get weaker, I dont have to do it on a fresh charge or after driving all day, but the truck sits in a barn most of the time.

remove housing. put key in key lock. push little recessed pin w a paper clip in hole you see. pull old key lock out. replace switch. reassemble in reverse order.

The OP wants to replace the switch, not the key lock. They are two different assemblies.

The starter issue is pretty common, alot of people just wire up a separate pushbutton switch directly to the starter. If you hide it it's a cheap anti-theft device too.

Sorry dude, here Ill try again...

316,

remove housing. put key in key lock. push little recessed pin w a paper clip in hole you see. pull old key lock out. replace switch. reassemble in reverse order.

Please, ask all the question you need to, Its a pleasure to try to help you out!

Thanks everyone for the help. I replaced the ignition switch and no improvement. She still wouldn't start. There must be a crimped or corroded wire somewhere behind the dash or something. I ended up running a wire from the solenoid line under to hood to the solenoid line in the harness by the ignition. She starts up from the ignition everytime. Only thing is that my neuteral safety switch is bypassed, so it will actually start in any gear now. I just got to be extra sure she is in park everytime and I have my foot on the brake everytime I start her.

So my starting problem is fixed, but the running rough is getting worse. Like I stated above, it used to only do it while the engine was cold, but now it does it almost all the time. Poor/rough acceleration. feels like I'm tapping on the brake pedal every few seconds (some call it bucking I think). It is definitely kind of intermittent. Sometimes I will be accelerating and it will be running like crap, but then all of a sudden it will start running like normal again, but then go back to crappy a few seconds later. I am also running very rich. It must be a fuel injection problem of somekind. Any hints of what to check out? She just had a tuneup done right before I bought her. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor and fuel filter.

fuel injectors.
Fuel pressure loss..
mas air flow sensor..
Vacuum tube leak...
the air duct between mas air flow sensor and throttle body air leak...

keep searching, plenty of wires and hoses to look at!
