mysterious rattle solved

Gaberelli, thanks for the tip. For the last two years on cold mornings my O6 SR5 has had the same noise you described. The noise is more prevalent this year, even when it warms up later in the day It would not appear until the vehicle speed reached 15 to 20 mph. It did not matter if the road was smooth or rough. The noise appeared to be wind related, however I sounded like it was coming from the running board on the driver's side. Last night I moved both roof rack cross bars back about two inches. The noise was gone when I drove the 4Runner today. Great tip. :thanks:
 
Solved my rattle problem the other day...sounded like it was coming from under the car, maybe heat shields...nope, exhaust hangers...nope. I inspected the exhaust from tip to tail and voila! The exhaust clamp on the Valor Exhaust tip had broken and the tip was just hanging there. So, if you're chasing a rattle add the exhaust tip to your list of places to check! :)
 
Mine sounds like it is coming from the passenger seat or floorboard, but the crappy part of it is that it only does it while my truck Is in gear with the brakes on...... that makes it difficult to find.

Just in case this helps someone else. I recently bought a 2006 T4R Limited (mods in process: FJ Springs and Shocks, FJ Wheels, 2/1 Cornfed lift). I had a super annoying rattle that would come and go. It sounded like a loose hubcap or something like that. It sounded like it was coming from the running board and since I planned in ditching them anyway I took them off but this didn't help. I checked every nut and bolt looking for something loose but found nothing. Yesterday I moved my head around in the cab while it was rattling loudly and when my head was in a certain place it sounded like it was coming from the roof. When I stopped I checked the locks in the roof rack and they were all tight but the cross member was loose in its slots. I simply loosened the locks on one side (front and back) and slid the cross member forward until there was some good tension then I tightened the locks while under tension from skewing the cross member. Long story short, rattle gone! This bugged me for a long time so I hope it helps somebody.

Mine sounds from air vent near front passenger door. It seems reason is in vent's trim. Still don't know how to fix it :(
 
I had a rattle that only showed up at speed. It sounded like one of the pillars or running board. It drove me crazy. Then I checked my roof rack like one of the first posters did. It was loose. Tightened it and now it's quiet. So if you think it's the running board or pillar you still might want to check the roof rack cross members.

But now I have a rattle out of the right front suspension. I just did the brakes on all four wheels and thought maybe something was loose. I pulled the right front and checked the clip. The clip had come loose but fixing it still didn't get rid of the rattle. Now I can't help but believe that it's just the brake pads rattling on the brake pins. The old pads had rusted to the pins. Not sure what to do next.
 
I have a rattle that I CANNOT figure out where the heck its coming from. Here is a video my woman took. It only happens when I'm drafting an 18 wheeler or if its really windy outside. But its starting to annoy me. Any ideas would be appreciated. You'll hear it clearly towards the end.

I am having the similar rattle with no luck on the source. I swear it sounds like a shackle or something just clanking around. Sounds like it's coming from the driver side rear tire area so i swapped out the shocks with Bilstein 5100's and its still there. Checked all exhaust hangers and its tight as can be. All bushings appear to be in great shape. This noise only appears when going over any type of bumpy road. Drives me crazy!!!! I have been trying to find it for about 2 weeks now with zero luck.

something to look at. my wifes Subaru had a knock/clunk and we finally traced it down to sway bar link ends and its only 4 yrs old with 52K
