Mystery Button

Alright I just purchased a 2001 4wd sport w/ 65k miles and it has a mystery red button on the left side of the car near the gauge light adjustment knob. I traced the wires back to a box near the pedals that says "shock sensitivity" on it and has 1-7 settings in a clock-like fashion with an adjustable knob in the middle. Any idea what this is for? Thanks.

could be i suppose. the button lights up red after its depressed but only once per engine start, ie if you push it after you start it and then push it again, it does not light up a 2nd time until after you shut the car off.

Definately some type of aftermarket alarm with shock sensor. Most aftermarket alarms have the alarm installed by the driver's kick panel. The sensitivity control lets you set how sensitive you want the shock sensor to be before the alarm blasts. The red button probably lets you turn the valet mode on or off.

I suppose it could be an aftermarket shock sensor hooked into the factory alarm too...

That actually could be pretty easy to do. All you need is to make the truck think a door switch is opened or something.

does the "red button" light up? it might be a LED lol... but if it's a button.. it's probably a valet switch... mounted in a Extremely crappy spot...

it lights up the first time you push it after you start the car, but only the first time.

hmmm..... it probably is a valet programming switch... does it have any words on the shock sensor? if so, let me know, I might be able to tell you how to program the unit.

I have this mysterious red button also. I would love to know what it does. I bought the truck used and figured it was part of a factory alarm system, but I guess not. It lights up, but not every time I push it. Weird.

my 01 4runner has the same button and i found the manual for it in my glove box when i got pulled over yesterday.
it is an alarm, you push it in to turn it on or push it so it is further out for off. when you exit the car you either use your fob to lock the truck or put the key in the door and lock all it to activate it. there are more things about it if you need to know i can tell you
