Mystery Shudder?

First off, since this is my first post on here, let me introduce myself. The name is Jason and I have been ghosting these forums for a while now (ever since family expansion forced me to sell my truck and look for an off-road capable alternative).

The vast amount of positive/useful information that you guys have been able to field on 4Runners really tipped the scales for me. These days I am driving a 1999 Limited with tall coils and a few small mods here and there (the other thing family expansion did was drain my wallet so most of my plans are on hold).

Anyway, to the problem at hand. I have been having some shuddering problems that I think may be coming from my driveline somewhere. When shifting from reverse to drive, I get a bit of a shudder. I recently had the transmission rebuilt due to the dreaded milkshake and I don't necessarily think the problem is inside the tranny (not ruling out a mount issue somewhere).

Also, I used the overdrive off button the other day at about 80km/h and when I went to engage overdrive again, I got a huge shudder coming from what seemed to be the back end somewhere. I repeated this several times since with the same results. With that said, the transmission shifts fine from third to overdrive when not using the button.

As a side, I just greased up the driveline the other day and it doesn't seem to have made much difference.

Any ideas?

I can't think of any reason you'd get a shudder during just those two scenarios. I'll guess it has something to do with the rebuild like they left the trans mounts loose..?

I've actually had the same shudder for quite a while. It's only when I put it in reverse and I have my foot on the brake. The tranny shifts very smooth though. I don't think it's the tranny. I still need to replace U-Joints, but I still don't know what the problem is. I don't use my overdrive button at all, so I can't say if it shudders when I have it off. It hasn't caused any issues but I'm interested to what it could be as well.

I get a shudder too!

It usually happens when I'm at a light and I happen to glance over to the car next to me and she's about 400 pounds, eating a burger in one had and smoking with the next.:wtf: then I quickly look away and miss this:girl: Driving off on the other side....that's usually when the shudder happens.

My initial thought was slip yoke when this all started. After greasing that and the U-joints etc, it did get a little better, but didn't solve the issue. The slip yoke was pretty devoid of grease though so it may take a bit of time for the grease to work its way in and make a difference.

Regarding the overdrive thing, I never really play with that button either because I live in a pretty flat area and do very little towing. I just pushed it for the sake of playing with it the other day.

In my thinking, loading and unloading of the driveline would produce a shudder if there is play somewhere. Pressing the overdrive button at 80km/h would load and unload the driveline as the rpms jump/drop. The same would go for shifting from drive to reverse and back.

I have to get under the vehicle this weekend anyway to put my skid plates back on so I will look for loose mounts and I will check the driveline again for play (didn't notice anything when I was under there before).
