Mystery wiring

While replacing the door speakers I noticed this mysterious bundle of wires that lead to nothing. They are all white with black stripes, a total of 6 wires that dead end into a plug that's just fastened to the inside door panel. It's nothing I NEED to know, but my curiosity is certainly getting to me on this one..

Anyone with a wiring diagram or firsthand knowledge that can put my curiosity to rest?

I hate a harness that has no wire numbers or connector number. I think you'll have to follow them to see what they go to. Is there one in the other door too?

The last time someone posted a thread about an odd connector it turned out to be a harness added by the dealer. It was supposed to connect to a lockout immobilizer that would disable the car if payments were not made. The bad thing about it, is that is spliced into many of the cars systems; and a very sloppy splice job at that. Another reason to follow those wires.

Other than that, what option (your Runner doesn't have) would have a connector in that spot?
 
Wire colors are pretty consistent throughout the truck- and these indicate ground.

I saw that in my door too and was like "Why the F did they leave that there?".

Yeah, the lack of colored wires made me doubt the possibility of it being intended for some option my truck isn't equipped with. I also find it interesting that it has its own matching connector attached to the door panel, but the other half of the connector doesn't lead to anything, no wires attached to that end at all.
 
did you get the truck used?

I had this kind of set up on my old car.. it was for my sound system that was VERY advanced and I was so far over my head with it, it wasn't even funny..
 
Is it possible the "empty" connector is grounding all of them to the door? Looking at the wiring diagram there's a bunch of B/W wires that go to ground - maybe that's just how they did it here for some reason? Can you check how that connector is attached to the door?
 
Well it spans a few years then if both the Op and Antman have it. Might be nice to have already installed grounds for future mods etc.
 
I have no idea about the current 4runner, but in other Toyota models they will often run all the local ground wires to a dead end connector where the female portion is attached to the panel and has an internal bus that connects all the ground terminals in the female connector to eachother and the panel. For example the 3rd gen rear door interior had the grounding for all the electronics done this way. It's just a convenient way to use the wire loom that has ends pre-soldered and not have to connect them all to a lugs on the body panel, instead they just all terminate into a single ground plug. It's probably not uncommon to use the same idea just to connect all of them together and make the manufacturing easier for some reason.
 
If all the wires are grounded, there is a fair chance it was done to single point ground several systems particularly those that have computers involved. We often did this in industrial systems to eliminate ground loops which can give data handling devices fits. Audio systems also suffer from problems with ground loops.

That connector just has a plastic clip that snaps into a hole in the door panel. No metal contact at all
