N-Fab Nerf-Step Running Boards

Just curious, why would the instructions tell you to do it the wrong way? Is there an evil genius at NFAB who likes to have others suffer?

Did you need an industrial ratchet set, or will my generic Lowe's set work?

The instructions are for a Tacoma and the bend faces backward on those. Basic hand tools is fine. I believe it is a 13mm, but it may be 12mm. No super torque. Just snug and tight. There are already bolts under the body in those locations. When you fit it up to the body you will see where they are. They are there to keep the threaded holes clean. The kit should come with new bolts to go in the holes. Keep the old bolts just in case like me, you decide to go another route later. You can restore it back to the factory look then.

Just wanted to say, they (N-fab) just added nerf-steps for the Limited today that bolt up with no issues. I had been looking for something like this for my 2013 Limited and ended up ordering the first set after they added these to their website today. I will post pictures in a couple of weeks after I receive them.

I've seen the new ones for the 10-12 SR5 and limited, but haven't seen them for sale anywhere but NFAB site.

Part number T1164RL got to be a cheaper place than direct.

you could try the predator tube steps from Toyota, they are a knock off of the Nfabs.

not sure if they make them for the 4runner, but they made them for the FJ and tacoma's

I just bought a set for my 2015 Trail Edition a couple of weeks ago from Amazon. N-Fab T1464R 329.56 Free Shipping. In the picture on Amazon they are gloss black. But these are the textured flat black ones. I called N-Fab before ordering to confirm first. Put them on myself in less then 30 minutes, love them.

I'm seeing this as a trend. I just bought some and am thinking about putting on a few layers of paint before I mount them to help deal with the rust issue. What do you think?

I just purchased a set two weeks ago, took me less than 10 minutes to install, the paint quality is not good.

Out of the box the boards are flaking, the steps are now silver. I can see a bead blast and some PPG epoxy primer in the near future.

They are nice, but I would not buy them again.

Yes that is a good idea. As noted in my post above, I am planning a re-painting or possibly Line-X coating.

Speaking from experience, if you have any possibility of ever even thinking about going off road in a rocky area, don't install "Nerf" bars or any other style of aluminum or thin steel running board. Spend a few extra dollars and get sliders. It doesn't even have to be super-heavy-duty versions, and you can wait for a sale or group buy and get a set for less than $500 shipped to your door. Even cheaper if you have access to a weld shop for weld-ons instead of bolt-ons.

Currently I take my aluminum OEM running boards off before going off road. I've got it down to a 15 minute job to remove the boards and the rocker trim, then about 30 to put them back because of a bent bracket. But it's a wasted 45 minutes. I bought and installed them, and I really wish I had spend about an extra $200 for a good set of sliders.

Before I started taking them off I kept dragging them on rocks. The front bracket on the drivers side was hit so hard once it bent the running board bracket, the trim support bracket, and even bent the rocker panel a bit.

Here is a pair of weld-ons for $204 + shipping: 1990 - 2013 Toyota 4Runner Off Road Rock Slider

That price is for hot-rolled, which should be fine for a mall crawler or even an off-roader in a mud area (Florida, southern Mississippi, etc.) who may hit one rock a year. To get stronger DOM tubing is an extra $50, and to upgrade to a square main tube with DOM outer is an extra $89. Shipping to my house was right at $50. So total to my door was $350, plus the cost of welding. The problem with this route is the fact that you're welding something to the frame. Fine if you will keep it forever, but may cause issues if you plan on selling some day.


These prices are for bare steel, which is what I personally would get. Then apply rattle-can black bedliner for step traction. I don't see the point in paying to powder coat something that's going to get scratched up on the rocks.
