What is the concept behind nitrous? How does it compare to supercharging and could a 4Runner benefit from a N2o system? Advantages/disadvantages? Costs?

Nitrous is a gas that mixes with fuel and when sprayed into the engine ignites, causing a boost of pressure (short bursts are used to prevent cooking the engine).

A supercharger uses the vehicles crank power to make more power (basically robbing horsepower but making up for the robbed horsepower and creating more) by forcing a greater volume of air into the engine which in turn mixes with the needed increaded fuel to make power.

Nitrous kits run from $350-$1000+ depending on which style kit you want.

Superchargers are upwards of 4 grand..

Nitrous is basically the thriftier man's supercharger

Don't quote me on the details and I'm sure someone may have a little more detail but that should be the basics of it all...
 
I'm sure there is V8 kit out there of sorts that you can put into a 4runner. Really not much to a nitrous kit..plumbing,solenoids and a nozzle for the intake tube (dry system setup)
 
Comes down to one question...actually one word...WHY?????!!!

Guys, at least i can understand supercharger on a 4runner, but NITROUS??!! I could have sworn that i did not see any 4runner in Fast and Furious (part I or II).:p 4runner is a HEAVY, SOLID-AXLE, HIGH CENTER OF GRAVITY, non-AERODYNAMIC BLOCK OF SOLID STEEL SUV. It is NOT built for speed nor handling.

From what i hear, Nitrous is not very healthy for your powertrain over the long haul. If you're planning on keeping your 4runner for a long time, then i am definitely against it.

If you are thinking of Nitrous on your 4runner, then you have clearly bought the WRONG SUV! Stick with supercharger. BTW, there are many other options that serve a far better platform for speed: X5, FX45, Caddys, etc.. What you are thinking is like buying a Corvette and then lifting it to run the Rubicon trail.

If you want more power and, at least, some durability, then get a supercharger. NEVER Nitrous!
 
Ummmm.....I'm a truck guy and no nothing about N2O. I was just asking a question to try to educate myself.

I had no idea what it's best applications were and if it would work well in a truck. Obviously not.

And I definitly bought the right truck. :D
 
Nitrous on an SUV can be amusing. I know someone with a 150HP wet kit on a Jeep GC 5.9L. He uses it mostly for surprising X5, FX45, and other unsuspecting drivers. If it is progressively actuated (no shock) and managed (timing retard, etc.) with plenty of fuel, I don't think it would be any more detrimental to the drivetrain than equal gains from a supercharger. Of course this would be for amusement, while a supercharger can be used for towing, off-roading, etc.
 
Personally, if you were to ever use NOS, it should be for a vehicle meant to handle well at high speeds. Let's be honest, SUV's are fine at high speeds when going straight, but when coming at a turn, you better slow down: I learned that the hardway.

When I owned a motorcycle, I went to one of the motorcycle get togethers: there was a guy there with a sweet chopper. This guy not only had a dragon claw for a kickstand, but also he had NOS. I still think that guy is crazy.
 
N2O

Nitrous oxide allows you to burn more fuel with each cycle of the piston thus giving you more horsepower. Nitrous oxide is unstable at the temperatures during combustion in the cylinder and decomposes into a mixture of 67% nitrogen and 33% oxygen. Air is only 20% oxygen. The increased amount of oxygen in the cylinder means more fuel can be burned resulting in more horsepower.

The downside to this extra horsepower is that an internal combustion engine converts only a fraction of the fuel energy into mechanical horsepower while much of the energy becomes waste heat. More horsepower then means more heat and if you use a Nitrous Oxide power boost for very long you risk heating the cylinders so much that they will be damaged.

There is to much risk using N2O like stated before you have to have everything managed proper the fuel,spark,N2O,air,etc. If anything is off it is not good for the engine thats why you hear about the systems blowing engines up. I don't care how safe they say the system is. Save your $$$ up for the supercharger.

There is no question that nitrous is, in the long run, harmful to your engine. I have used it on two cars. Unless you build an engine from scratch to handle the additional heat & hp, you ARE doing harm, and something WILL break. And for our nice, not built to race 4R, I agree, it is about a sin. Want to play with nitrous? Build a Chevelle.

Some on this thread referenced handling, while discussing Nitrous. There is no corelation; do not think you need nitrous to exceed the safe handling limits of our rides. You can quite easily get your panties in a wad with these top heavy rides with the stock hp. Lastly, a well set-up 5.9 GC does not need N02 [or a S/C] to totally smoke an FX 45, X5 [V8], or any other SUV. Porsches weren't around before I came out of mine. 0-80 they are [were] badassfast, and would outrun alot of performance cars as well.
