naive question about tow packages

Forgive me in advance for asking such a stupid question. Lately I've run across a lot of 3rd gens around where I live, however the more and more I see that are SR5, and look almost identical to mine, more and more do not have a trailer hitch. Was a trailer hitch not standard for every SR5 and Limited model? Being that I do apparently have the tow package, does that make my SR5 any different from those who don't have the tow package?

i could be wrong but i think the tow package came with the transmission cooler and the receiver hitch maybe a stiffer rear

It was installed by dealer or port. An owner could've installed it later on as well. Never factory installed though. Toyota had an OEM receiver hitch and Southeast Toyota Distributors had a deal with Reese to supply receiver hitches 10+ years ago.

^ Right. I don't think there are any differences in the truck besides the reciever hitch and trailer wiring (i.e. brakes, power, cooling, etc).

My 4Runner was originally a base model (most stripped SR5 essentially) and didn't come with a receiver. My dad later installed a Draw-Tite and wiring harness.

I have the distributor installed hitch by Gulf States. I looked at the window sticker and all it lists is hitch and wiring harness. For some reason I thought the 16 inch tires were part but I guess not. This is a 2001 SR5
