navigation error

I have a 2006 4Runner Limited with navigation. Lately I have been noticing that the navigation wouldn't track to the roads I am traveling on. Sometimes, it would be communicating to be I am in the wrong state. I took it to the dealer and they determined error code 58-13 was present. The dealer didn't have that error code listed as an option - thus they didn't know what to do. Does anyone know what error code 58-13 means?

No idea about the code, but this is a somewhat common problem that is usually fixed by updating to the newest DVD. If I remember correctly there is even a TSB out that recommends the new disc. If you do a search for navigation on this board you should be able to quickly find the threads discussing this problem.

fyi- Upgrading to the new disc will remove the manual override function unless you follow the steps for creating a new custom dual-layer disc. There are a few threads on this board discussing the override and disc upgrading.

Good luck!

There is a TSB out on this issue. My parents 2006 4Runner had the same problem. The dealer will order a disc with upgraded software free of charge for you in exchange for the old disc.

dealer update

I just went to the dealer and the parts department said they knew of no TSB but they did say there was a disc update. For MD, there were just a few ramps and roads updated. He didn't think the disc would solve the issue since I travel on well known roads that were on the original disc in teh 06 4Runner. Unless the TSB has other procedures to fix/correct other electronic and/or firmware updates, how would just updating an already decent disc correct the problem? ......or perhaps the dealer I am dealing with isn't quite up on the problem and I have to purchase the TSB online and bring it in to show them - not sure....

Dealer is wrong. The TSB is EL012-06. You should be able to find a copy with a google search.

I have to laugh whenever I read how clueless some dealers are compared to the collective minds of T4R.ORG :D

As I just found out how to run diagnostics on my JBL I also found that the DTC's are expained and located in the repair manual. I just started a thread asking someone to post the particular page for me.

FWIW while searching on this I found the Siennaclub.org I think had a copy pasted into a thread of the DTC page for the navagation from a 2004 4Runner repair manual. If you seach for "jbl codes" over there you will probably find it.

Also these are in the "Diagnostics" section of the repair manuals.

That dealer does not know what they are talking about. The disc update worked for my parents 2006 4Runner. Unfortunately, the dealer did not give them a copy of the actual TSB. Also, the disc should be free.

outstanding

yep, the dealer parts department and head service person didn't know a thing. i am taking it in tomorrow with that TSB printed out. that is outstanding and thanks so much. its amazing how out of touch they are. I will keep ya all updated - talk soon.

dealer

I handed the TSB to the dealer this morning. They will call me back. To be fair, I won't list the name, but will say its the only Toyota dealer in Annapolis, MD.
;-)

dvd installed

the dealer just swapped DVD's. Interesting enough, the new DVD looked almost identical to my factory installed DVD but it did have one different version/stamping on it - which made me believe I did receive a fix, not a duplicate ;-) After a few days, I should tell soon enough if it would fix the problems. So far, everything is working good.

Glad to hear it worked out. It's kind of scary how some dealers can be so lame. Apparently, some don't read TSB's as they come out.

My local dealer has no idea what C-BEST settings are, despite a recent TSB that walks through disabling the factory DRL's via the scan tool. Guess what - C-BEST settings are changed almost the same way (just a different menu option on the scan tool).

My dealer also has the upgrade on order for my 06 T4R. Over the phone they said no way, I handed over the tsb when I got there and they ordered it with no questions!

Perhaps I should have begun a new question instead of reviving this old thread, but could someone please answer this...

I had the navigation error problem in my 2006 so the dealer "repaired" it for free according to the TSB. The fix seems to work, and I did lose the override function (a terrible price to pay). I check the DVD version before and after the update, though, and it says ver.05.1--just as it did when I took it in. I popped the DVD out and the copyright date is 2005.

So...this sounds like the dealer might have put the new DVD in to update the software and then removed it (to sell to someone else) and popped the old DVD back in.

Is my thinking correct?

According to the TSB, they didn't change any of the data; they just fixed the one bug in the program. So it makes sense that even though you have a new disc, it still has the same "old" version number. The disc has to stay in the player; the dealer didn't just update anything.

The fact that the override is gone proves that you do in fact have new software. That's an unfortunate but intentional side effect.

There is a workaround to get the override function back. It involves replacing the loading.kwi file on the new DVD with the version from the old DVD and then burning the disc on DVD+R DL disc.

Unfortunately, the dealer didn't give me the old disc back. That was one of the reasons I was suspicious. Since they fixed the problem for free, I don't feel like I have any grounds to complain unless they gave me the wrong disc in the end.

The tsb tells the dealer to destroy the disc and not give it back. The toyota part number did not change, only the little denso part number on the disc changed. No need to worry, the dealer didn't do anything wrong to you.
