I have a '13 SR5 with the basic head unit.
One time I was using google maps on my phone, and the voice directions would chime through the radio. I was listening to the actual radio, not bluetooth audio.
I haven't been able to figure out how to make this happen again. Was it just a happy accident the one time?
Does anyone know how to make voice guidance from phone navigation apps come through the car stereo? I have an Iphone 5 if it makes any difference.
Sorry for reviving a dead thread but a friend recently showed me that he was getting google maps through his nav-entune head unit while the audio source was set to FM. After a bit of finagling and trying so many different combinations of settings, I've figured out a way to get it to work
most of the time.
The following presumes starting with an iPhone and Toyota Entune system that are not paired. If you are already paired then you can probably skip ahead a step or two.
1) Pair iPhone to Entune system
2) Turn Toyota off
3) Open Google Maps
4) Turn Toyota on (doesn’t have to be running, just ACC is okay)
5) Wait for phone and head unit to pair/sync
6) On the iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and change speaker source from Toyota to iPhone
7) Reverse step 6 (swipe up from the bottom and change speaker source from iPhone to Toyota)
8) Turn Toyota off
9) Turn Toyota on
10) Get your directions using your iPhone to play over whatever the stereo is blasting
This method is a big finicky. The biggest issue is to have google maps launched before starting the vehicle (before BT pairing). Note that the phone somehow tricks the stereo into thinking that the google maps is making a phone call and patches the phone directly through the head unit. Apparently the phone call system uses a different ‘channel’ or ‘comm’ than the phone music system. Now if there were a jailbreak app that allowed us to use the full function of the phone using this entune ‘hack’, that would be great.
If anyone else figures out a better way to do this or one that is more reliable, then please chime in.
