Need a commuter car - Prius?

Does Toyota Reccomend using idependent mechanics? If not then realize what the manufacturer says should used as a guideline, but most certianly not something that is set in stone. Toyota also says their fuel filters are a lifetime product which is obviously false considering i have changed mine 4 times in 60k miles.

Yes, guidelines. But, no idiot will go 50k miles before changing oil. You may be that one person that do it, but no one in their right mind would. That's idiocy. Of course, when things go wrong, these numbnuts always blame someone else, never themselves.

Feel free to posts FACTS dude. Show me a comparo that shows the superiority of TDI over Toyota hybrids in efficiency, city or highway. The FACTS for Prius durability and reliability are clear. Feel free to prove me wrong.

I will agree that the EPA estimates are quite underrated. I was averaging 44.X mpg in combined commute, that's actual calculated. I was driving it like I wasn't paying for fuel all the while too and the mileage just got better as it broke in.

Fuel prices are on the rise in the longer term, my solution is to move closer to work and ride my bike like I used to.

EPA may not be perfect for everyone. BUT, it gives a true scientific/objective way to compare two different cars' fuel economy. It takes the "ifs" out of the equation. It takes the environmental influence (one person living at sea level while the other lives in the mountains). It takes driver out of the equation (grandma vs. Formula 1 driver). So, b/w the two (Jetta TDI and Prius), there is no question as to which one is more efficient on ANY road...and, like EPA, the comparison tests from big magazines confirm the big difference in efficiency b/w the two.

Thai it sounds almost like you owned an unreliable VW product and are scorned on them. They really aren't that bad, trust me I've owned one. I do agree on your suggestion of the Cruze ECO, I seriously considered this car for a long time but it just wasn't sporty enough for me. They're very well equipped from the factory too IMO for their price point.

The oil was designed for Large commericial vehicles, that use 15+ gallons of oil for a change, the oil is made in the same weight as the TDI motors use, so infact in terms of a truck 50k miles between changes is a smart descicion (using the proper oil) considering the cost of 15 gallons of synthetic oil is high, and you cut back on labor costs and truck downtime, so only an idiot would change the oil at what you say a regular interval is. I just applied this same logic to the jetta considering its the same motor oil.

John, the last time that you changed your oil in your Jetta was 50,000 miles ago? If you did not, then isn't that hypocrisy?

You would think that VW would advertise this amazing feat!! What is the official oil change interval for TDI?

Bring some facts to the table instead of John's theories and assumptions!

No personal experience...but i have enough friends to confirm JD Power's and basically every survey out there. The point here is that Prius is simply more reliable and durable than VW. Resale value is not even close. VW is more powerful & handles better...no one is arguing that. But, John is talking out of his arse trying to convince others that VW Jetta is better than Prius in the very things that make Prius so damn impressive.

The oci for the mk vi is 10k, and the list of 507 oils is very short

You guys are sure?? Did you check Owner's Manual? Ya know, VW kills tons of trees to print those darn little books!

John said 50k mile interval is perfectly OK...and he sounds so confident too! It is clear that his reasoning is so sound that he calls anyone doing anything else (even 40k mile changes) idiotic!! :rockthrow:

I am positive that the manufacturers recommended OCI is 10k mi and requires an oil which meets VW 507 specs which, coincidentally, is a low SAPS family of 5W-30 oils.

Let's quit annoying Mr Thai
He likes the Prius !

No, he just hates for anyone to have an opinion that's not his.

Then he wades in and insults them, a la anyone who has a VW, likes it, and has had no problems is "badly informed and trying to sound intelligent..."

Whatever.

Haven't changed the oil since this oil came out, haven't driven the car much lately, been driving the Ford, Rover, and Yota lately. You twist words, 50k miles can be done safely as long as the filter is changed and you use the new oil that is rated for it (suggest taking oil samples every 15k), so far it is only known in the diesel world, which explains why you haven't heard of it.

It's up to you guys, you can take advice from some who drives a 74 Land Rover with 70k miles, a 96 Ranger with 221k miles, a 97 4runner with 204k miles, and a 99.5 Jetta with 295k miles, who also works part time as a mechanic on machines. Or from the doctor who drives a newish minivan, prius, and a subaru outback. Your call!

Ahhh, all my internet "unfriendlies" are coming out of the woods to show support for one another.... :infidel:

It is always interesting that these folks have nothing to add yet come out to show support! I love how they all hold grudges for a long long time. Sad.

Koz would be here but he loves Toyota too much to argue with me on this one! :D

Bring FACTS dude.

Hahaha, dude you're what 21 years old?? And not so long ago, you claim your parent's cars as your own! :smashputer: Classic internet boasting!!! Remember, i have been on here long enough to see your embarrassing entry into this forum, John.... Weren't you banned (by someone else) early on for something embarrassing?? Me forget. :)

Show me someone who has actually done the 50k miles intervals.

It looks like some of us have struck a nerve with Thai.
Did you invent the Hybrid?
Why so defensive?

Hybrids have batteries. Batteries have a limited number of charge cycles. Batteries wear out and will need to be replaced. This cost will be substantial.
All true facts.

Defensive? Yeah, i am against ignorance...and the spread of such.

READ the Consumer Reports link and try to understand it. It ain't that hard dude.

Wow, you don't have to be a jerk.
You are obviously the master of hybrids and battery technology.
I give my opinion to the OP and get ridiculed for it.
Thai, I won't bother you again.
