Need a new muffler! Need advice!

What's up guys, i'm on the market for a new muffler and need some advice. I've recently done the deck plate mod and the ISR (yay!:banana:) and from what i understand you need to add a less restrictive muffler into the mix in order to really benefit from these mods.

I know Borla is a good choice is there a specific model? I'm not interested in a loud muffler truck is my dd. Thanks in advance.

Just get a stock replacement. These "performance" brands don't do shit for power, and everyone you drive by will think your exhaust is falling apart because it's so loud and crappy. How do I know? I tried it.

Lol, what do you think about the Dynomax turbo? I hear good things about them plus it's cheap compare to the other's.

TRD Cat back! It doesn't get any better!! :party: (other than OEM replacement.)

FWIW, opening up your exhaust in back of the cats after doing the deck plate and ISR mod will do nothing for any HP gains. The logs need to come off. HP gains after doing both of those mods is also highly debatable.

Naturally you will hear great things about them because the people that like them like their cars to be loud and annoying.

FWiW, a "quiet" exhaust recommendation never works through the internet. You need to hear it in person. Naturally the larger the muffler case the quieter, but even large mufflers can be stupidly loud, despite what that guy in a forum said. And then there's the drone at highway speeds. Just get a stock replacement.
 
Mine had a Flowmaster 40 on it when I bought it, and it was beyond annoying. It only sounded good at full throttle or idle, and it droned at normal freeway speeds.

Got rid of that POS and put in a Flowmaster 50. Much better. Sounds good at idle, and WOT but no drone and much quieter overall than the 40. Leave those for the teenage mustang crowd.
 
As Rock Rat stated, your not going to gain a noticeable amount of HP.
I recently replaced a stock OEM that had split the seam due to corrosion. It was a load annoyance, and very nice lie.
Went with a Walker Premium Quietflow SS from Rock Auto.
Fit perfect, inexpensive, and sounds very nice and smooth. Not loud at all. In fact, I thought the engine died during my initial test drive it was so quiet at idle.
Took the time to prep and paint it with high temp paint prior to install t help with any possible corrosion.

I have a Borla Pro XS on my 4Runner. I had a sound clip of it that was pretty good but now I cannot find it. Not some janky Youtube video but an actual recording. It is quieter than a Magnaflow, they drone at about 2,000-2,500 RPMs which unfortunately is highway cruising speeds. My old Pickup had one and it was loud, though not as loud as a flowmaster.

The Borla sounds very good with the V6, more of a growl to it than an annoying farty noise or something. Performance gains? Not a whole lot, even for my supercharged rig. My old muffler was beat up bad so I needed one. I really like how it sounds though, not loud unless I step on it. My supercharger is almost as loud as the muffler from the inside.
 
I've been really happy with Walker Quiet Flow SS exhaust and down pipe on my 00 T4R, it's exact fit and sounds good, not loud, nice growl at 2-3K RPM's. Will not drone inside the vehicle too which is a huge plus. Also priced right @ $150 for exhaust and $70 down pipe. Don't forget to add a couple of gaskets as well.

So you think a high flow cat would make a difference? Thank you btw!

No, not with the deck plate and ISR mod. A high flow cat just uses less catalyst material such as platinum, palladium and rhodium. It's still a cat. Nothing magic about them.

If you don't have DEQ, some guys on here remove the cats, or gut them out. You'll notice a difference but that would be with any vehicle with the cats removed. Now you have to deal with masking cel codes.

Search this forum, there's literally tons of info, debate, dialog, etc on HP gains on these engines. The only true gains are a properly tuned ECU with the SC, preferably with headers or a properly installed turbo. I say "properly" because there are a lot of other changes you should make before installing either.

Back to your question I would not replace my cats looking for hp gains if there's nothing wrong them. I just spent damn near 3K replacing my entire exhaust system but I was throwing a 0420 code intermittently (every 500mi or so) after changing sensors. Long overdue. Plus I am installing an SC once I feel everything on my rig is ready. Nothing you can do will increase your HP with a deck plate and ISR mod.

If this is your original exhaust, then you're long overdue. Read up on the magna flows. Many have had customer service and workmanship issues on the 22-24" length mufflers. Aside from that, the OEM muffler is great!
 
Why bother with a high flow cat on a stock 5VZ? So that your 15 year old 4Runner gets to 60 in .1 less seconds? If you want power that is actually noticeable, you need boost. All these silly intake mods just make your 4Runner more annoying on highway on-ramps.

I just ordered this complete kit from Rock Auto last night. Did your kit install without any problems? The only part I do not see listed is the bolts. Did it come with them or do I reuse the old ones?

It installed with no issues or complications, according to the shop. It's a direct bolt on so everything matches like it's supposed to. Mine did not come with bolts but I think the shop supplied them because they looked new, post install. Also note, you might want to get 2 gaskets (Walker 31384 Exhaust Gasket) just in case, I've heard some installs requiring an extra gasket on the CAT side, mine didn't... I had also ordered insulators (Walker 35725 Exhaust Insulator, Walker 35111 Exhaust Insulator) but the shop ended up using the old one (one of them was not needed, the one for the back I think) as it was still in good shape.

Note: Just looking at the past pics and it seems like the new insulators were used after all...

While they were under there, I also had them change my fuel filter (Genuine Toyota (23300-62030) Fuel Filter Assembly) and swap the Rear Differential Breather with a new one (9093003136). I also ordered the plug to relocate the breather but never installed it.
