Need a quick answer

Drove it yesterday to work fine but as soon as I got home from work I could smell a strong oil burnt so I popped the hood and smoke was coming out it appears oil leaks out and falls on the header which is hot and creates smoke :/ now I can't drive it.

Damn. Your vavle cover is way cleaner than mine. You might be able to band aid fix it with some kind of fipg until you get to be able to replace it. I'd double check that though.

Do you have to remove the upper and lower plenum to change the passenger side cover?

Smear a bunch of JB Weld into and over that crack on the outside, skim it on the inside, and lay a narrow bead of high temp gasket maker around the corner before you seal it back up. I bet it holds. Or you could do it the right way and replace the valve cover, and then get your hands on a service manual so you don't have to rely on others to know the right torque settings, but what fun is that?

Just for future reference, I've always used the same high-tech torque settings on every rig I've worked on, and never had any trouble with leaking or cracked valve covers - go finger tight, then another half turn. You can't go wrong

Am going to go with the right way thanks sir my new valve cover should be here next week I don't want to smear jb weld and then not be able to remove my cover or something.


Does anyone know if I need a new valve cover gasket as well with 8 new washers? Thanks

Your washers are probably fine, what kinda shape is your gasket in? If it's still supple and squishy and fits snug into the channel in the valve cover, go ahead and reuse it. If it's stretched out or starting to get hard, replace it.

That much torque applied to those little bolts could have weakened them, or more likely the threads in the cylinder head. Be extremely careful tightening them down again. Well right now that I was doing the valve cover gasket replacement I bought everything new pretty much from Toyota
I got
2x valve cover gaskets
6x spark plug gaskets
16x valve cover washers
1x grommet
1x pvc
2x intake plenum gaskets

So they should be good hopefully...Besides the one washer that cracked with the valve cover :/

My new valve cover gasket arrived today we'll at least new to me thanks to josh. Cleaned it since it was a little dirty and installed but this time no torque wrench
