Need advice: do I need to replace LBJs on a 2000 t4r?

Hey guys, I'm very new to the t4r world but loving it, just got my 3rd gen 4wd 2.7L manual last month. It is a year 2000 with 120k on it and I'm wondering if I need to replace LBJs. I don't know if the previous owner already did this.

The mechanic who inspected it pre-purchase mentioned all front end stuff looks very good and there is no underbody rust. I was reading some threads here and got scared about the LBJ incidences so checked recalls online but year 2000 did not have an LBJ recall.

Do I need to drop a few hundred bucks on this at the dealership (not very mechanically inclined) or is yr2000 not at risk like the 01s and 02s? My 4runner seems to have a small lift and is running 265/70/17s on FJC rims if that matters

Never a bad idea to replace them. But check them for play. If there's no play you're probably alright.

They're a fairly easy DIY too. Read up on it, I'm sure you could handle it.
 
I just did mine today along with a few other things. They are easy however getting the tie rod ends out can be a PITA even with a separator. Otherwise, its the main king nut on the bottom, 4 bolts through the mounting plate and the tie rod end. If you dont fight them and have any issues, it should take an hour or less per side.

Just as a note, have a back up plan to run to the auto store or dealership for new tie rods incase you bugger them up like I did on the drivers side.
 
If you don't know that they've been done, do them. It's a lot more expensive and dangerous if they fail because you left them. Use OEM parts, but I wouldn't think twice about using a cheaper mechanic if I wasn't able to do it myself, it's not a complicated job.
 
Those parts are correct. Hold on though, I think I can find you OEM LBJs for a little cheaper. Wait a second.

EDIT: Okay, I found it for you. And yes, they are always good to change and they will not be too bad of an experience. The only hard part is getting the pressed ball joints out. You'll know what I mean when you do it :D

Not that its a real gain or anything. But a little cheaper.

Just ordered some today from these guys for 88 bucks a piece. With shipping the total was like 183 bucks for OEM. Felt like a pretty good deal and the guy Mark was nice and helpful. The number is 877-200-0179. Oh yea. Called toyotapartsbarn.com

I was told by the guy at Camelback Toyota that they sometimes have multiple part diagrams, and therefore they'll have multiple part numbers. But if they're the same price, it's very likely they're the same part.

For LBJs, I'm pretty sure it's the same part for 2wd, 4wd, v6 and 4cyl. Either one you order will be fine.
 
Take it to a dealer. Let them run your VIN and see. If they haven't replaced it during the recall, you'll get it for free.

So I called the central toyota number provided on the recall online and they told me my vin# is not affected by any recalls, incl. the ball joint recall.

Does that mean mine is safe to not have to do asap?

you dont have that number handy by chance do you? I just ordered mine but if i can get it done under a recall i will just sell the ones i ordered. Thx ahead of time.
 
Yeah i hear ya, the mobile mechanic i know has quoted $150 labour and I provide the parts so all in all about $350-400 incl. parts and shipping. Are you doing it yourself or stealership?
