Need advice on 2006 4Runner Limited Navigation System

I recently purchased a 2006 4Runner Limited Edition V6 / 4WD.
It has the JBL Premium Sound System with 10 speakers I believe. My question is that is there any plug and play Navigation System which can go in the original basel without modifications?

I had to get an aftermarket radio bezel. The stock one leaves a gap on either side of the HU. I had to modify (cut) the bezel, looks so-so. The sure way to address this issue is to order a new radio bezel for a NAV equipped Limited. However, that costs big money (~$1K). Anyway, lots of threads in the Audio and Electronics section. Use google as a search (it's better than the search on this site).

Or you could always get an exterior navigation system like a garmin or tomtom brand, they're relatively inexpensive and good to use! Also can be updated too for newer maps. I've used the same Garmin since 07 and never updated it. Works better than my Pioneer AVIC-D3, which has the 09 map disc in it!

Presently I am using Garmin and it fits very snugly on the dash. The trouble is there is no power outlet on the dash. Wire keeps dangling all up to the Gearshift stick.

Any suggestions?

About the Navigation I think I will stick to and external device. I don't feel like tampering with the awesome factory finish of the dashboard.

You don't have to go that route, you can get the trim piece used in the urban runner with the stock indash tom tom gps (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/audio-electronics/36149-urban-runner-radio-trim-ring.html). It will make any standard double din unit look stock for cheaper than the whole limited bezel.

@ YYZ...Good luck on your decision, I know I want to pull the trigger on an indash gps but they're just so damn expensive and I have too many more important mods that are higher up on my priority list. Now on a completely unrelated topic, funny enough there is another member on here with the exact same screen name as you, just his is in lower case...maybe you two are soul mates lol.

Not to disagree with any advice given but, about 2 years ago I was getting really tired of the GPS in the middle of the window, phone charger (and GPS) cables all over the place. So I invested in a Pioneer AVIC-910BT, and looking back I would do it again in a heartbeat! I have a 2006 Sport so we have the same dash layout, with the non-JBL (in order to install something like this you will need an interface module) check Crutchfield. I did it myself only took about 2 hours and I replaced all the factory speakers and install 2 amplifiers. My only issue is the side plates that the install kit came with are kinda crappy, so I have ordered some replacements that are nicer. Now I doubt you will need to go this far as the JBL system is pretty beefy, best place to check is Crutchfield they will not only show you what you need but all the associated accessories. The current model for the Pioneer AVIC class is the AVIC-Z140BH, if you have an iPhone the experience will be even better, and the newer model has many more features than mine does. Here are some pics of mine; sorry if the quality is not that great took in the parking garage at work at night…….

Thanks for your advice. I feel the same way. Indash gps is way too expensive for me right now.

Wow! You did a great job. This inspires me to see if I can do it too. I will contact Crutchfield and see if they have some easy install gps for JBL system.
By the way, I see you have put floor liners too. Are these from WeatherTech or Husky? How good are these?

They are WeatherTech just got them last week, love them, have front, rear and cargo. Cargo on back order still waiting! Good thing about Crutchfield is they will also send you all the installation instructions (with Pics) and if you have issues will help you out right over the phone or internet chat.

Anything AFTERMARKET the urban trim is fine, however, not if you want to fit the OEM NAV unit.

Hey YYZ! If you end up replacing your head unit with a nav system and want to sell the existing jbl unit, let me know! I've been wanting to swap my 2003 6 disc jbl with the mp3 capable unit used in the 2006+ models for a while now.

As somebody mentioned, the urban runner trim ring makes any aftermarket double din radio look great but you do have to double check the original opening. As I recall, there are some openings where it doesn't work quite right (maybe non-JBL)

I'm a big fan of the Kenwood units with the built in Garmin GPS. I installed mine into an '04 with JBL and it looks great. Here's my install thread.

I don't think I can dare to do so much of installation all by myself. I am quite confident about myself that I'm going to mess up the whole thing or break something. May be after sometime, Right now the truck is only 10 days with me and it is in immaculate condition. I think you can understand my feelings inside me :hiding:

Guys! Finally I am getting Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH installed this coming Sunday also getting the steering phone controls. I will post my reviews and pictures after its done. :lookout:

I got the Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH installed with a Boyo backup cam, and the steering wheel controls a couple of weeks ago and love it!! It's a great unit and there is so much you can do on it. With my Iphone it sync's automatically, and I can make calls, and play Itunes from my phone through the car speakers without plugging it in. When you plug it in you can play Pandora, play tv shows on the head unit, music videos, see your calendar and much more. I used the nav a lot and it works pretty well, and there were a few times that the highway was backed up because of an accident, and it would show me and offer an alternative route, I thought that was pretty cool. I'm sure you will love it!!
