Need advice on 1st gen purchase

Any thoughts on this 1st gen? Wife has given me the green light to spend 10k on a new rig of my choice and I have the 1st gen fever.

Here is the latest one I've found and have had contact with the seller.

86 Toyota 4Runner
Manual
Has a new crate 22re with 1,200 miles
SAS Swap
Ballistic Shocks
Almost new 35in BFG Mud-Terrains
Front Yukon locker and rear welded
Has a extra half top
Separate set of five 35's on bead lock rims
5.29 Gears
Have a few other parts
2 spare windows
Power steering pump

It has a few dings, one by the gas door/rear fender, bottom of tail gate, and some rust on the front fenders.
He is asking $6,500
He said new front fenders run about $60. I'm not sure how much a little body work would cost and maybe a paint job.

Just wondering what you experienced 1st gen guys think about it. What should I offer if I should move on it?

If you have a $10,000 budget you can do better than that. Get a rust free original solid axle 84-85 truck for under $10,000
Wait a year spend $4,000 on converting it to a VW diesel and be happy for 20 years and 35mpg.
He wants to much in my opinion. The lockers are worth it but that v6 is like the Achilles heel.

Kind of my thoughts. I would like an original 22re. It just has the SAS, lift, lockers that I'm looking for.

Yeah but how used are they? The fact is you don't know and that's a lot of unknowns on top of a crap engine. You could have total failure on your first outing. Better with you budget to get a good solid starter and then upgrade

That thing looks beat for $6k. Maybe for $3k...

You can find a clean rig pretty stock for $6k, or if you shop around and aren't in a hurry you should be able to find one with mods in good shape for $10k.

Keep looking.

Thanks Yeah I'm taking my time looking. Not going to rush and buy something. I'm still working on my 3rd gen so that keeps me "mod" occupied. Also interested in a FJ80 so whichever one comes first.

I think 6k is high for that truck. It's not got a terrible build list, but trucks are still cheap. You can get more for your buck I think.

I am not sure what the market it out there, but I live in SoCal.

I just purchased an 87 with everything that one has and more. It came with a cage and a ton of extra parts, wheels etc..

I paid around that price.

Mine has the 22RE and I would stay away from the 3.SLOW... Before I purchased mine, I test drove a couple 3.0's and they were absolutely gutless. Not to mention the long road ahead of you with the common issues with that engine.

For your budget, you can buy a REALLY nice rig out here in CAL. Fully built and loaded...Might be worth the flight and shipping... Still would be under 10K I am sure.



**The ARB lockers are a must and a great value, 1K in lockers in each axle... the OG Longs are a great bonus as well.

Wow those are pretty impressive. I've been looking around the area just kind of hard to go too far out with a 5 month old at home. It's always seemed like the nicer builds were from out west.

judging by your posts, i assume you are not looking for something to drive daily or even semi daily. you're looking for a toy, something to wheel in and get dirty. something turn key for this purpose.


if that is the case, i would go with the first one. do the small amount of body work it needs and get a cheap paint job. which can actually be decent if you prep the truck right and remove key parts before hand.

Either one has a few cheap parts in it. Likely means diffs are cheap builds too. If you go with either, I would pull both diffs immediately, check pattern, backlash, and preload.

That is exactly the case. I have a work vehicle provided by employer. For any other errands I drive my wife's '16 4Runner

That was part of my concern. I just copied and pasted his post. I'm getting that he didn't do the build himself so what he really knows about it has me doubting.

I agree with $10 k too steep, even if it had a 22R-E.
I would rather spend $2500 on a 22R-E, then spend the rest on mods I would do or supervise the making of myself.

Very true and I completely understand that. I just don't have the free time and extra cash on top of the vehicle purchase to do that. Trying to find something that needs just a few small odds and ends done and that's it.
