Need an engine

Hi, I have the opportunity to get a great looking 1990 4WD 4Runner for real cheap because it has no engine in it.

It has the manual tranny still in it, I would just need a new motor. I would like to put an engine in there but don't know what my options are or even where to get one. I don't have a lot of extra spending cash and this is going to be a daily driver that wont see too many miles so I dont need anything extravagant.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Obviously it will be easiest to put the same engine as it came with.
In '90 that would be the 22RE 4 cyl or 3.0 6 cyl.

Are there any other sites you would recommend? I havent had much luck finding boards with good classified sections....

Best bet would be to go to a local junkyard and grab a used engine and rebuild it yourself. This is the cheapest way, and then at least you know what you have in it.

Second, try looking for a local engine rebuilder that you think you can trust. This will be probably the most expensive but you might get lucky.

Third and probably one of the best way to go, there are several engine rebuilding companies that have a pretty good reputation on the web. If you can get one of these engines and put it in yourself you won't be doing to bad. If you need someone to put it in for you add another $500-700 to this price.

Personally, I'd consider dropping a Chevy 350 in it with a TH350 tranny. The initial swap would be a little pricey but once you get it done replacement engines are a dime a dozen... I have literally seen SBC dress up parts at convenience stores...

There are a few out there on ebay, here is the link you can try that will show you a few options. If I were you I would go with the 4 cyclinder rather than the 3litre v6 toyota engine. It has virtually the same HP, better on gas, does not have overheating issues/head gasket problems etc...
