I've posted in othe antenna threads but got no hits. The antenna on my '00 is bent and the motor doesn't work. I'd like to get a fixed antenna, hopefully a shorter one, to replace it as cheaply as possible. I've looked into the Taco whip mod but I don't think that's necessary unless I'm not seeing something. If someone could link me to the parts I need to buy I'd be very appreciative. Thanks guys

My antenna was snapped by the previous owner and I hated hearing the motor run every time i turned on the radio.
I went to Walmart and bought a cheapo antenna for like $12 and it wired in nicely.
However, I would recommend looking on ebay/amazon for one of the short stubby antennas. I've heard good things about them. The antenna I got at walmart isn't the strongest but I use my ipod more than the radio so its not too big of an issue for me.
The hardest part is getting it through the fender and behind the dash to the head unit. I found taking out the glove box makes it quite a bit easier.

I'm assuming that not all antennae are directly drop-in compatible with the bracket that holds it to the truck, right? How do I know which antenna will fit?

So I'm still not clear on the mounting bracket for the antenna. How do I know what mount works with what antenna??
I like that it seems like a direct replacement but I'm not sure I like the way it connects to the mount base. I will definitely go look at them this afternoon though, thanks. Is it just a screw-in swap?

I went to a junk yard and found a old Tacoma, used a 10mm socket to take it out. Used pliers to cut the zip ties holding it in. I also walked around the yard and found a few antennas that fit the mount. Picked the one I liked and spent all of $10. Works like a charm.
I recently replaced an electric antenna that was very broken. It was dumping engine/spark plug noise in to the radio and it made the radio sound like shit - almost unlistenable at idle.
In order to replace a power antenna with a whip/standard antenna you need a mounting base. This is what the taco whip mod does. You dont have to buy the taco whip antenna, you can buy a super cheap $10 antenna from the parts store, but in order to mount it your going to have to open up the fender, remove the old antenna assembly and install the new one from the stealership. I just paied $85 CAD for the assembly and they wanted $50 for the Antenna too, but I cheaped out and bought a no-name antenna.
If your really trying to do it on the cheap, and you have some fab skills, you could rip out the old power assembly and fabricate a new mount. It would have to be isolated from the metal fender though. As in plastic/nylon/whatever non conductive material between your antenna and the chassis. Maybe you could reuse some of the plastic from the power antenna??

I also have an O'Rielly's antenna. Its black just like the Tacoma one and works fine. I think I paid like $15 or so.

eBay seller Raderra sells a stock good quality replacement for <$20. It's mentioned in almost all of the replacement 3rd Gen antenna threads and everyone (as well as myself) have had positive things to say about it.
Replace the antenna, pull the motor at the same time to make sure you don't have a bunch of broken pieces of the original one in it that is making it not work.
The power antennas really are cool.... when they are functioning properly. hah. :yo:

Just found my next project! My antenna is stuck up and won't come back down. Hope it's not the motor...

That was the same problem mine had when I bought it from the original owner. Check my build thread here for the change out.. It turned out that the pieces had broken off in the motor, so it wouldn't pull the antenna back down.
Good luck. It was fairly easy.. I just took my time with it and made sure everything was done all cleanly. Haven't had any issue with it since. :yo: And this Raderra one is pretty good quality so far. No issues.
