Need back window and tailgate help

don's 4runner

New member
I have a 91 4runner that I've owned for two years and it has 355k on it, runs well and has needed very little work. I have a problem though, I've never been able to get the tailgate open and the power window has never worked, not a big deal until the back window starts dropping down and will not stay up and it's getting worse. Two quetions, how do I open the back tailgate, key doesn't fit all the way in and how do I fix the back window from falling down. Thanks for the help.

the key operates the window and once the window is down then you reach in unlock the tailgate and drop it down. turn the key one way it open the window turn it the other way it closes. the window has to be completely down for the tailgate to open. if the key wont work try opening the window from the switch on the centre consol. there is also a window lock button on the consol to make sure it is unlocked before trying it. if the window still wont stay up after rolling it up it may need to be rebuilt

The key does not go all the way in and the window button has never worked, any idea's?

Someone may have shoved something into the keyhole on your back window?

My 4runner is one key fits all. Ignition, both front locks and the back lock. Unless locks were changed at some point it might need a different key.

Chances are your going to have to replace the key lock and or motor, once you remove the motor the window will slide up and down freely at that point you can manually open the tailgate by turning the tab by hand the tabs where the two cables attach, once you look inside the tailgate it will be obvious. hopefully you can just replace the lock. If your desperate you could always remove the motor and then just prop the window up with a piece of 2x4 with cloth on the side that comes in contact with bottom of the window of course leave the regulator in.hope this helps, good luck!

You don't have an up/down switch for the window on the center console?
How about removing the tailgate cover inside, disconnecting the motor connector, and running 12VDC directly to the motor to make it go down.
