Ok, so I thought I did good when I found a '87 4runner in Phoenix and drove it home to Iowa. What I didn't realize is the dry heat all those years had dried up all the interior trim. It almost crumbles to the touch. I am on the hunt for replacement trim, my question is this, what are the years that I can look for, for parts? example: 85-87?, 86-88? Help please! Also, Since this truck has never seen an Iowa winter or tasted road salt, any recommendations on what I can do to protect my frame, body. I want to garage it for winter, husband thinks I am nuts. I look at this way, I am paying on a 2010 Camry with full coverage, why endanger the truck? duh!

I oil under coat my truck for the VT winters.

Oil is not very eco friendly. And you have to reapply it. Plus oil on the road is a huge problem when road is wet --hydroplaning. You can buy undercoating but most people either use POR-15 after power washing the under carriage or use some of Auto Body Repair Tools Shop, Auto Body Supplies, Automotive & Classic Car Restoration - Eastwood products. I'm going to use rust converter, encapsulator and satin black chasis paint.

Thanks everybody for the replies! I was thinking about going as far as rhino-lining the frame and a professional ziebart type undercoating for the body. This may sound crazy, but the '86 PU I had for 10 years had expanding foam sprayed into the frame cavity and I gotta say the frame was never an issue at all, I am actually juggling that idea around. Eveybodys telling me the rust will be all over the truck after a couple winters, I am going to try my hardest not to let that happen. It's a beauty. Anywho, thanks everyone.

Some of the 88-89 interior pieces differ from the 84-87 pieces. For example, the headliner on earlier models is vinyl, while the 88-89 is the newer style fabric. The same goes for the sunshades.

Door panels also differ, with armrests being bolted on for earlier models, and being molded in on later ones, this includes the power window controls being in different places.

Now, they are interchangeable, however they are different.

Most of my problems is the bigger trim inside,seat belt assembly covering, trim around the bottom of the hard top where it attaches. The door panels are ok , the head liner is good. The visors doable for now. The trim covering the post between windows on the passenger side is warped real bad. I robbed my wrecked '86 PU of the little square inserts behind the door handles. I will be getting serious this Spring getting these trim pieces replaced. Is there a source I can get NEW ones if I cannot find old ones? I bought this truck for $2400, 240k. The lady I bought this truck from owned it since it was 5 years old. She actually named the truck "Mitzie". I have a die hard Ford/Chevy father-in-law, but this guy will rebuild my toys because of their simplicity, so miles wasn't an issue when I was scouting for one. Driving with tire hop caused by unbalanced tires for 1400 miles, I still got 25mpg. Cold air will run you out! I got a good base to work with and over time, hope to turn heads even more.

Sounds like a fun project ahead of you.. have fun with it.. wouldnt store it over the winter tho.. I would use it in ever season.. Take good care of Mitzie.... lol

Try a dealership for new parts. I've been amazed at what Toyota could get me for mine.
