first thing i was trying to go up a hill and started spinning and i saw that only my rear was spinning but i was in 4low and the hubs were locked didn't seem like there was any problem putting it in 4 low. what could it be? second problem was after that i was driving home and my brake light plus battery light was going on every time i accelerated. i got home turned the truck off and now won't start i turn the key and theres no electric nothing. please help its my everyday driver. thank you

brake light plus battery light was going on every time i accelerated. i got home turned the truck off and now won't start i turn the key and theres no electric nothing.

it might be as simple as a dead battery. have you tried jumping ? do any lights or anything work without having to run the engine ?

Are you sure neither front wheel was turning? I'm assuming you have an open diff, you could have been spinning one front while the other stood still. If you've really got no power to the fronts, look first to your front driveshaft - have a buddy roll back and forth real slow in 4wd and look to see if it's turning. If it is, trouble is probably in your diff. If not, trouble is probably in your transfer case.

Was it your battery light or your charge light? And how were your engine temps?

I ask because it sounds a lot like what happened to me a couple weeks ago - My water pump/alternator belt got chewed up somehow, and any time I accelerated, it'd slip and I'd get my charge light and brake lights come on.

I still have no idea why the brake light was illuminated. Get your battery checked at Autozone or wherever... if they tell you it's just drained, look to that belt, then look to your alternator.

re

well when i tried to jump it it didn't do anything now lights or ignition buzzer noise. ill get the battery checked. but i don't know what the charge light looks like but a red battery and the red break light would come on when i would accelerate past 2000 rpms. but yea im sure none of the front wheels were spinning. i did take the hub lock off and cleaned it because it was hard to turn and then put it back on. could i have put it on wrong? it turned and felt like it locked.

what year? what engine? manual or automatic?

best way to check 4wd engagement is to jack up the front end with the trans in gear and spin one tire by hand. if the other tire spins (will spin opposite direction), then 4wd is engaged. if not then you have problems. when you spin the tire by hand look to see if the cv shaft spins as well that will tell you if your hubs are engaging properly. If your truck has Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD) there is an actuator that engages the two half shafts together and that could be the problem.

as for the electrical problem it sounds like an alternator issue. either the belt is slipping or the unit itself is on it way out; or both. if you have ABS that would explain the brake light as that is the ABS computer throwing a code for low voltage to the computer, same with the battery light; low voltage. charge up the battery or get a different one and test the voltage across the terminals with the engine running. around 14V is good, 12V means bad alternator.

The Brake and Charge lamps both light when there is an alternator problem.
Unless there something is shorted, you should be able to hotshot a good but dead batt. Have you checked the fuses and fuseable links in the engine bay fuse panel?

thanx

i checked the battery by jump starting another car with no battery. it started fine. so i went out and got a new alt and put it in. still nothing no tail lights nothing. checked the fuses none of them seen to be broken. i followed all the wires back but all were in place.

the runner is a 1987 SR5 manual 22re

If your battery is good and there are no wiring problems (opens or shorts), the brake and hazard lights should work no matter what.

re

yea thats what i thought. i guess it must be a short somewhere but i haven't spotted it anywhere and they tested the alt before i bought it so that shouldn't be a problem. any hints to where i should look for a short. this is starting to beat me up here.

i guess it must be a short somewhere

Not necessarily.
What is the battery voltage when connected?
With the battery disconnected, what is the resistance between the +12V cable and the -12V cable?

it reads 12.79

OK, 12.79V is a good reading and would say you don't have a short to ground killing things.
With a good batt and connections you should have power to the Brake lights, Hazards, and Horn. They are direct wired to the battery, not passing thru a fuse or fuseable link.

re

i checked the fuse-able link and it was broken off. that could be part of the problem but don't know why the break lights don't work. where could i get a new link?

re

thank you guys for all the help turns out it was that fusible link. i put the new one on and bang runs better then before. well also got a new alt out of this. \thanks

re

yea i think that the 6ft gap i jumped at 30 mph had something to do with it. because the battery strap was broke i think the battery was bouncing into the hood. stupid ? i know but i can't help it. this thing is sooooo much fun. the motor has 345,000 on it and still will drive 4hrs at 85mph no problem. plenty of power too.

Yah, battery is not supposed to hit the hood. :D

SR5? What's your RPM at 85? I can't get my automatic 22re much past 75 without thinking I've got it wound up, but maybe I'm being a weenie.

Could be the trans too... I hope to thrash it so I can justify a manual swap. :D
