Need help making a decision.

Hey fellow 4th gen owners. Doing the Head Gasket next week and I'm on the fence about what else to replace. I used the search and found people with differing opinions. I got a 04 4wd with 164k on the clock.

Should I change the timing chains, tensioners and guides? These parts arent the cheapest so I'm trying to make the right call.

if your heads are off and your coolant is drained, go ahead and knock the Aisin water pump and water pump gasket kit out. The guides will be a good idea to quiet things down a bit, idk about the tensioners though- i've heard from my local dealer that the timing chain setup doesn't need maintenance.

Maybe also inspect/change your cam bearings, plus get a valve job done while is apart?

If it were me and my goal was to keep the vehicle as long as I possibly can I would at least inspect the guides and tensioners for wear (and likely replace them) the chain itself I might leave alone.

I'm going through the exact same planning. My 06 with 230k miles has the symptoms of a head gasket giving up.

My current plan:
Head gasket kit / replace head bolts
Machine head flat / install new valve seals
Replace water pump
Replace timing chains
Replace tensioners / guides
Replace exhaust studs (Michigan rust, don't trust them to come out clean)

On the fence (aka "While you're in there"):
Install Doug Thorley longtube headers (since they're coming out anyways, getting P0420 already)
Install Y-Pipe (URD or aFe)
