Need help! Scion T1806 Radio Install Problem

Hey guys!
I've been here for a few weeks and have got some great ideas and tips.

I thought I did all my research and read all the threads about installing a Scion head unit but maybe I missed something.

I can't seem to get the unit to work - wondering if I may have a bad HU??

Here's the stock radio I pulled out:

And here's the unit I'm trying to install:

Also pulled out what I think is an amp??

So now I'm left with 2 plugs and 2 antenna wires:

I understand there are different opinions about what to do with the small antenna wire but for now I'm not hooking that up.

***MY PROBLEM***

With the 2 plugs on the harness plugged into the HU and the large antenna plugged in I tried it out....

-No display
-No colors at all
-The antenna seems to go up and down constantly when I push any buttons
-The radio works but I can't see what station its on BUT the volume doesn't work and it's barely loud enough to hear.
- CD doesn't seem to work at all
- Ipod doesn't work at all ( I purchased the cable)

Any ideas? Did I miss a harness?
There are 2 other places on the back of the radio with nothing plugged in. Maybe those are for the steering wheel?

I don't know.....

The original unit appears to have a 20 pin plug which is like the JBL systems. However I don't see the 20 pin plug on the amp. Was this amp plugged into the original radio?

The amp does have a 20 pin plug on it. That plugs into the toyota radio.
The 4 runner harness has 2 plugs, a 10 pin and a 6 pin, that plug into the amp. Those 2 plugs now plug right into the Scion radio.

I don't think I have the JBL system, however I do have a factory amp. Is that normal?

I also noticed posts #'s 5 & 6 from this thread, CO_flyfisher also had an amp that he took out.

You don't need the factory amp... You seem to have everything correctly!

Your scion unit has a built-in amp, right?

It literally should be plug and play.

I installed a scion head unit into my '88 runner and it was the 2 plugs and antenna.

Did you pull the negative battery connector before removing/installing the radios?

Ok, that's what I'm starting to think. (everything is right) And, I think the Scion radio does has an amp built in.

I didn't unhook the battery but the key was off.

I put the stock radio back in for now and it still works fine. I'm glad I didn't cut the bezel yet to fit the Scion radio.

I think I got a faulty unit....

yep, sounds like a faulty unit.

in the future, remove the neg cable from the battery before doing any electrical work on your rig.

that way you can rule out a possible short.
