Well, under normal market theory; if no one is biting then you are not meeting the appropriate demand.

A.k.a: Either your price is way high, or you are not reaching the right people.

What is your asking price? Does it match similar cars in your area? Second, how are you reaching people?

And finally, 2wd 4runners sell slower than 4wd, no matter the rims. :)

Patience. Adjust the asking price till you get some nibbles.

I think you just found your problem. You would be able to get 10K if you had a 4wd 4Runner. I'd say you're several thousand over what people would be willing to spend on a 2wd 4runner.

Where did you get that number? Market matters.

I pulled up autotrader. 6500 - 12000. I think the ones at 10k and higher for a 2wd are crazy.

NADA is showing 8500 as the HIGH RETAIL. You would expect to pay that at a dealer, therefore your price should be below that. While NADA/KBB are just guides, I think it is fair to say that 10 grand for a 10 year old, 2wd truck is very high and that is why no one is interested.

I think you should move it down to 8500 and see what happens. Expect anyone who comes, to negotiate down and maybe be happy with 7500?

Personally, I think 7k or 8k is fair for that.

Have receipts for anything- maintenance, mods, etc.? It might help to use proper punctuation - it turns a lot of people off when looking at an ad. Ripcord is right, might be better to return it to stock and try some more. What does kbb.com suggest for a price?

Well, first of all, you need to list more info.

It's not like this is a newspaper ad where you are paying by the word. You need to put a little effort into the ad.

Engine? Tranny? (AFAIK all 2001 - 2002 4runners were 3.4/auto but your ad should still say that because the person shopping may not know that much about 4runners.) Does it have a locker? Any other mods (stereo, leather seats, etc?) How long have you owned it? How has it been maintained?

You say you have a lift. How much lift? What manufacturer?

Your ad doesn't say it's 2wd. It should say that otherwise you will get a lot of people initially excited who then get pissed because at that price they'll be expecting 4wd.

Is that the factory hood? Because if so that is a sport (a/k/a Highlander) model which should increase its value and the ad should say that. I would also throw "Low Miles" into the title because at 96k, that really is a nice, low mileage vehicle.

Also if you have the stock wheels it would be more advantageous to you to put them back on and sell the aftermarket wheels separately.

Biggest question: What are other people in your area asking for 2wd 4runners? That should clue you in there as to what you should be asking. Scan all of the CL's in your state to see what other people are asking for similarly equipped vehicles.

You have to realize that with CL, your shopper is basically engaged in a process of elimination. He doesn't have time to look at every vehicle that's advertised, so when he looks at an ad, he's going to be looking for reasons to skip it and go on to the next one.

If you leave information out, you are giving him a reason to move on to the next ad.

If you have no pictures (or the pictures you have are bad) you are giving him a reason to go on to the next ad.

Hope that helps!

EDITED TO ADD: Also don't be afraid to take it to a dealer. Here's why: Because of the crappy economy, there are a lot of folks out there who can't afford a new car. For that reason, used cars are a hot commodity now. A nice condition used car (especially a highly desirable car like a low mileage 4runner) is something every car dealer would love to have on the lot. Just make it clear to the dealer that you are looking to sell, not trade, and that you will be checking out several dealerships. You may decide that getting the "sure thing" from a dealer is better than waiting for endless CL lookie-loos to come and go. Just a thought

If you are asking $10K, I'm afraid to ask what you have into the truck.

Get a quote from someone to do the 4WD upgrade, and compare that to the price you would sell for.

If it's close to a wash, keep your LOW mile rig!

Another way to look at it....

Are you happy with the truck and just wish it was 4WD? Are you in a favorable equity position (how much would you lose selling this one and buying another)? It might be more cost effective to swap yours over to a 4WD and keep a rig that you already know a lot about.

I hate to say it, but people asking prices like that are what's causing over inflation in the used car market. I know it's a Toyota, and a low mile one at that, but people selling their cars far above KBB and NADA are screwing everyone including themselves. When you go to buy that 4WD 4Runner, you're going to be on the other end of these shennanigans and you'll be asking yourself why people are asking what they're asking for a 10-15 year old 100k+ vehicle.

I know it's not practical to do a 4x4 swap, but if it's not your DD, then this rig would be the perfect candidate IMO.

Sorry for the rant, that's a nice ride you got there. I'm looking to do the same thing as you at some point actually. I've seen your ad on Craigslist a few times. I'd start at $8800 and settle for $8k. That's SoCal's market right now for a 2wd low mileage 4Runner if you want to start getting serious offers.

You need to realize that you may like it a lot. But it doesn't mean its worth anywhere near 10k.
